This could be either fantastic or terrible. First of all I think tron shouldn't have a cinema sequel. The computer game was a good way and was and STILL IS the damn best computer game around.
As for Daft Punk, they scored the best song of the past 20 years and most likely the coming 20 years to: "Digital love". The first time I heard that song I couldn't move and had to follow it to the end. Incredible! If they can repeat it for Tron, the film will sound track wise be so good it will be health hazard.
Are you serious? I couldn't think of anyone better suited than Daft Punk. This is gonna be potentially ground breaking.
They even resemble Tron!!!
Yes I am serious.
"I couldn't think of anyone better suited than Daft Punk." I read this connected with this story all around the 'net, and I'm starting to think that this is probably what got them the job in perception-is-everything Hollywood.
I'm disappointed in terms of what little I've heard of their music. Seems like standard house/acid/club music to me. Nothing special.
Scoring a film is much more than musical ability... MUCH more. What about Daft Punk makes you think that they can do a better job than anyone else?
I played that Tron game and thought it was terrible. A wonky FPS experience with awkward controls and a pretty lame story.
They are brilliant musicians with a total understanding of analog and digital synth soundscapes which will fit these new visuals like a glove. And much of their music is devoid of lyrics and singing and resembles futuristic film scores already. You're obviously not familiar with their work. Check out their live concert. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X3Uc3BMdP9Y&feature=PlayList&p=CFDFBC946E217403&index=0&playnext=1
This is a bold new step for them (and the film) and I'm excited for them to get a chance to prove their chops on something like this. Here is a film that takes place inside a computer - and two musicians who are on the cutting edge of electronic music.
What do you want? The same old tired mediaventures sound?
This is gonna be something new. Something fresh.
What makes you think they can't? When you know barely anything about them or their music?
"Irreversible" score by Thomas Bangalter has some pretty brutal electronic tracks. I have a copy I've listened to a few times. Not sure if I'd care to listen to it again though.
Daft Punk, I'll admit is an inspired choice, however, Their particular electronica style was really big in games during the reign of the PlayStation 1.
Most games today have orchestral scores behind them...
But, then again, TRON has a very neon-digital-retro quality. So, an abundance of techno music which pays homage to Wendy Carlos' original work would probably fit the bill.
Besides, if you remember the original TRON, Disney also tapped JOURNEY to provide original songs for that film.

I agree completely.
I'm not entirely sure the movie should be scored with an "electronica artist", but Daft Punk is a pretty solid recommendation if you had to do that. I'd probably perfer Paul Van Dyk but thats just me.
I would perfer to see Wendy Carlos return over all though.

I agree. And I cannot judge until I've heard the score in its *complete* fashion. Plus, I like what I've heard from Daft Punk; I'm just a Carlos fan, hands down.
*If Kraftwerk were still in beeswax, I think they'd be an appropriate choice, too.

D.S.
I take that back. I only played a port of the game (the ps2 version I think) and it was poorly translated for that system.
I'm sure the PC version is a much better experience.
I wrote a really long post on why I thought Daft Punk are the wrong choice for this project in response to The Mutant, but I clicked away from the window for a moment and lost it.
After that, I realized that I'm no longer interested in discussing their participation in Tron 2.0 anymore. Either they'll suck (my opinion) or they won't. However, my interest in this film has waned a bit because of their involvement.
Though I'd prefer Wendy's triumphant return (when will some crackerjack filmmaker grab her and use her again, fer Chris-sakes?!), this is the best alternative I could imagine.
