I have to do this a lot for professional purposes- downloading video or audio-only, and then converting what I've downloaded to various formats with various options.

The best solution I've used (and I've used a lot, both stand-alone and web-based) HANDS DOWN is...

ClipGrab
https://clipgrab.org

ClipGrab is a stand-alone app for downloading from YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, and more. Available for MacOS, Windows, and Linux. Free, well-supported, regularly updated, easy to use, and with no advertising* or malware or anything like that. No registration or clutter- just download and install and use. Can save as .mp4, mp3, .ogg, and other formats, with many conversion options. Can also just rip/save the original format of the source file. Fantastic utility.

*If downloading the Windows version, make sure to click the link "Download version without third-party offers" and not the bigger button. The main button/installer (as opposed to the link I described in the previous sentence) uses an installer software package that includes some commercial offers during the installation process. The smaller text link uses a "pure" installer (with no offers).

**The installers for MacOS and Linux are offer-free.

Hope this helps others out.

Just put an "ss" between www. and youtube in the address bar. You're taken to SaveFromNet,com It's kinda low res, but it's easy and free.

Just be sure not to click on anything on the page other than the box showing the format and resolution if you want to avoid major popups.

Video Download Helper used to be the King. But they screwed that progam. It doesn't work half the time without having to install something extra or pay to have a watermark removed.

Thanks! Is this confirmed safe? No spyware attached to it?

ClipGrab is open-source, non-profit, and very highly regarded.

The app itself is safe (provided you download it from ClipGrab.org and not from some other 3rd-party place).

Also, if intending to use this on Windows, make SURE you download from the text link and not from the main "button." ClipGrab itself is malware-free, but the Windows installer is available in two versions. The first version installer (which is downloaded by clicking the big button on the main page) is a bundle which includes 3rd party offers which are presented during installation. These offers are not ClipGrab offers (they're bundled along with ClipGrab into an installer by a commercial 3rd-party), and I have no idea if they are safe. Instead, use the 2nd (admittedly less-obvious) installer. It contains nothing but ClipGrab, which, again, is perfectly safe. Mac and Linux don't even have the commercial installer- their only option is the "clean" installer.

I have no affiliation with the app or its development community- I'm just a very happy user. For both personal and professional reasons, I'm extremely picky about my computers, my workflow, my applications, my privacy, and my electronic security. Virtually nothing is 100% in life, so I can't give you any recommendation with absolute certainty, but I am very satisfied with ClipGrab. I don't hesitate to recommend it, which I can't say about just about every other converter I've used (both standalone and website-based, and I've used a ton).
