This comes close to the video of David Hasselhoff flying through the air with dachshunds.

What kind of image are they trying to build here?

Did some at Kelloggs just say "Do whatever the hell you want. I don't care. We're dumping Corn Pops anyway so just spend the money before the fiscal year is out."

Did all breakfast cereals stop putting toys in boxes? I was at a store a couple of weeks ago and went through a strange period of regression in which I bought a couple boxes of cereal (I never buy cereal). I got some Fruity Pebbles and Trix for old times sake, and there were NO prizes in the box! Outrageous! When did this tradition die? Lemme guess...too many complaints from parents about their tots choking on little chunks of plastic? pfft.

It must be embarassing to be a poor out-of-work Komodo Dragon, forced to take on work like that, which is especially beneath it's societal status.

I remember when this cereal was called Sugar Pops, then when sugar became unfashionable, the name morphed into Sugar Corn Pops, then finally Corn Pops. Are they really dumping this cereal or was that a joke?

I kept waiting for William Shatner to break out with Mr. Tambourine Man.

That would signal the end of civilization as we know it... eek

Nowadays, I buy cereal because it's a good snack, not because of some cool toy inside. Although I still buy much of the same cereal as when I was a kid, now that you mention it I don't recall seeing a toy inside anything for at least 4-5 years. Huh! Maybe someone claimed the plastic toy or the bag it came in contaminated the food, so they decided to play it safe. Or, they simply want you to send away for it so they can collect your information and profile you. Probably the latter.

My favorites are/were (I order a case of Quisp online every year):

It sounds like only Oldsmith went to the site.

You truly must see this. It's bound to be fabled, a thing of legend. Future generations will ask if you saw it.

I checked it out too, and made my way through one of the scenarios. Pretty wacked-out stuff. Reminded me of the kind of spastic, unpredictable weirdness you see on Japanese TV. I like it.

Wow those clowns are scary ! Reminded me a bit of the "Cloverfield" sites that sprang up as part of that film's viral ad campaign. Great stuff !

While at the grocery store this weekend, I noticed a lot of Star Trek merchandise being offered in cereal. If you're into collecting Trek stuff like this, you'd better dust off your extra-large cereal bowl.

He, he...yeah, that's some crazy shit right there. Completely non-sensical. But appealing, in a way. I agree with AM, it is slightly reminiscent of those absurd Japanese TV programs.

I was never a fan of Count Chocula, and everyone I know loves it. It always seemed a second-tier flavor to me when you could pick from other, better cereals.

I also remain a supporter of Boo Berry and Frankenberry - which still come out around Halloween here.

My favorite the last couple years is Frosted Miniwheats. Thankfully, they tend to be a little too expensive to buy all the time because once or twice I've eaten then entire box in one or two sittings.

I like Frosted Mini-Wheats, but the newer flavors really suck (blueberry, cinnamon streusel, chocolate, strawberry). The new bite-sized honey minis are good, though.

Quisp is the best "bad" cereal that's actually very healthy, and it has a lot of flavor without being too sugary. Kind of like Kix meets Sugar Pops with a lighter, softer, more mealy texture than Cookie Crisp. I'd like BooBerry and FrankenBerry more if they did away with the marshmellows. I always pick them out.

In the 50's, sugar cereals were exactly that.

There were Kellogg's Sugar Corn Pops, Kellogg's Sugar Smacks, and Kellogg's Sugar Frosted Flakes.

All of which I devoured, regularly.

Post was Kellogg's major competitor, and they had a cereal they called Sugar Rice Krinkles. The advertised it with an animated oriental stereotype, as I recall, with hornrimmed glasses, a pigtail, and buck teeth, who used to call out, "Sugah Lice Klinkus!"

True.

Have times really changed? Or, is all this just hidden somewhere?

Like Disney's pickaninny centaurette in FANTASIA, companies try to hide these things, and pretend they never happened.

Honey-glazed, powdered sugar goodness. Isn't that the Purina logo? Guess they once made people food, then decided humans we're too picky and started making dog food instead.

BTW, none of today's cereals even come close to tasting like the cereals shown below. I don't know what's changed, but things tasted much better back then. Frosted Cheerios taste nothing like these old favorites. Someone should revive these classics. I'm getting bored with cereal.

Interesting how after about two months of buying my usual cereal (4 of 5 happen to advertise the Star Trek prize) I finally got the standard Starfleet badge (with the yellow light) after seeing the movie Friday and opening a box of Fruit Loops this morning. I've gotten (and thrown away) about 7 of the green Romulan ones, 5 of the black ones, and about 6 of the other Starfleet-type ones. Now I can finally say I've gotten to throw away every type. smile Of all of them, the black Klingon one was the coolest.

Also, since this is the first time I've seen a prize in my cereal in years, I happened to notice it's placed on the inside-top of the box, sitting on top of the cereal bag. So, a person could simply open the corner of the top flap and take out the prize while still at the store - if you're looking for a specific toy and don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on cereal, hoping to get it. I'd say switching a toy from one box to another wouldn't cause any problems if you're casual about it.

Found Honey Kix a couple weeks ago and it's my new favorite cereal, next to Quisp. I've only been able to find it at one store, and they're all out.

Two new cereals I tried over the holidays.

Honeycomb cinna-graham

Chocolate Cheerios (they're so new I can't find a pic of the box; these are better than all the other chocolate cereals on the market, IMO.)
