I had posted a week or two back that Jerry Goldsmith had scored an Episode of BEN CASEY that starred and was directed by Jerry Lewis. I had posted a link to a site that evidently had WRONG information.

Today I received the episode from a friend and now have the correct info. Pretty cool.

The episode is titled A LITTLE FUN TO MATCH THE SORROW.

Great episode with a brilliantly poignant performance and great direction from Jerry Lewis. Sort of a very early PATCH ADAMS treatment here.

Anyway, aside from the great David Raksin Main and End Title Theme, this episode was superbly scored by none other than...

Maestro Johnny Williams (not Goldsmith as earlier credited).

What a great score it is. There is a scene where Lewis as a Doctor, breaks down when a patient dies and is trying to get away from everyone. It's nothing but Lewis and Johnny Williams and what a passionate sequence of scoring. (almost 4 min. cue)

Here is that sequence from the episode scored by Williams:

I've yet to watch the whole episode but I've scanned through a bit and as far as the music, think early Johnny Williams dramatic/action LOST IN SPACE type stuff but set in a more real life, Medical world. Really great stuff. Beautiful classic Johnny Williams music.

Here's a BEN CASEY episode scored by Leigh Harline:

The next one guest starring Walter Koenig (pre-Chekov) could very well be scored by Goldsmith. It's just a short clip but listen closely. What do think?

I've never had much interest in Ben Casey, but as a longtime Jerry Lewis fan, this episode sounds incredible! Must investigate...

Williams and Goldsmith working on a show that neither did the theme for? That is something.

Jerry Lewis rarely gets props for his dramatic acting (anyone remember his stint on Wiseguy?).

I remember the Wiseguy episodes because my dad watched that show every week. He told me about the Lewis episodes coming up so I watched them when they originally aired. Impressive work to be sure.

Wow, that's interesting, zooba. I had no idea Williams had scored an episode of BEN CASEY, and I'm pretty up-to-date on all things Williams. This one has seemingly slipped by most filmographies and buyer's guides and you-name-it. Thanks for the info!

This is very, very interesting. Several years ago, I mentioned to someone: long, long ago, I saw a television show where Jerry Lewis played a doctor. Again, last week, I mentioned this to someone. That Lewis, when serious in the few films he did (and when Hollywood allowed him to play serious), he was great!!! I also mentioned King of Comedy, where Lewis played the straight guy and DeNiro played the comic.

Anyway, as I recall, in the Lewis as doctor show I viewed, Lewis has a break down in a stairway. Is this the Ben Casey episode?

Yes Melvin. That's the one. And that's one of the scenes so superbly scored by Johnny Williams.

Zoob:

This is far too much to even have thought would happen. Very glad this topic has come up. For years, this tv segment has stayed with me. A kid at the time, viewing regular Saturday afternoon matinee's, seeing B movies and Jerry Lewis the comic; imagine my shock at seeing Lewis on this tv show (now thanks to you I have the info) playing a serious role. I was knocked out, especially seeing Lewis go through the stairwell trauma.

Jesus, just cannot let this go. For year, I've carried this memory, now you've come along an given conformation to something I can now put to rest. THANKS!!!!!!

Don't you love it when the "old timers" reveal their star power, charisma, and just plain acting chops when seemingly out of their element? Lewis got flak for trying to inject pathos into some scenes of his own movies and they didn't always work, but given the right environment, he delivered.

Unfortunately he followed this with the legendary THE DAY THE CLOWN CRIED which Lewis refuses to show anyone and by all accounts is one of the worst attempts a comedian has ever made at being taken seriously.

The only episode of "Ben Casey" that Goldsmith scored was "Eulogy In Four Flats".

Do you by any chance zooba know of other Ben Casey episodes that were scored by Williams?

Sorry Kons, at this time I don't.

Be great if there were more.

I love discovering old Williams and Goldsmith Lost TV Music Treasures.

Just the other day found an old Goldsmith

GE Theater scored Episode:
