As far as "classic" old TV series go, THE MUNSTERS is my all-time fave (LEAVE IT TO BEAVER coming in at a close second).

I would LOVE for Jack Marshall's spooktacular music from the series to be released on CD.

What are the chances...?

I second that!

...Except it's Universal, so unless things change then no.

Damn.

I too could go for a Munsters soundtrack.

For years I thought there was a Munsters TV soundtrack available on Decca records. Turns out the recording features the cast singing rock and roll songs.

The other Munsters recording has Herman giving a guided tour of the house and introducing the listeners to the members of the family.

It's a crap shot...but you never know. Other gems (which we never thought possible) have been released.

Me: "I think I shall drink to this possibility!"

Herman: "Oh, goody!"

The album for THE ADDAMS FAMILY was not perfect, but at least it included rerecordings of the dominant character themes. I think I'll play Gomez' theme now...

I love "The Addams Family" TV soundtrack. I've always had a hunch that maybe Neal Hefti composed a couple of the tracks on that recording. I can't say which tracks gave me that impression right now as it's been awhile since I've listened to it.

Yep, that's a cool album. Goofy, groovy, and just plain fun. In a perfect world, we'd have CD box sets featuring the original music from both of these classic shows.

For someone who's not very knowledgeable about old American TV series, what's the difference between THE MUNSTERS and THE ADDAMS FAMILY?

For someone who's not very knowledgeable about old American TV series, what's the difference between THE MUNSTERS and THE ADDAMS FAMILY?

To me, the MUNSTERS scared the crap out of me as a kid. Just looking at the pictures of Herman Munster in the above posts gives me the creeps. I know it was a comedy (and I knew as a kid) but the makeup was soooo well done that I just got weirded out.

I never watched as much of the ADDAMS family but I THINK the difference between the two is thatthe humour in the ADDAMS family was a bit more sophisticated??? Anyone care to correct me?

So they WERE actually two different shows? From this thread, it seems like THE MUNSTERS was just another name for THE ADDAMS FAMILY.

I just picked up THE MUNSTERS: THE COMPLETE SERIES on DVD at Target just a couple of weeks ago - always thought this show was pretty funny. The only problem is, I read somewhere that there might be "some" music replacements on the set, but I think the review said it was small - I will know more when I start watching the set...:-)

The Addams Family did have a touch more sophistication in its humour, whereas The Munsters was more sitcommy. Unlike Gomez and Morticia, also, Herman and Lily behaved more like a traditional married couple - although ironically the Addamses looked more human than the Munsters (and as Apu once asked on The Simpsons, if Lily was a vampire and Herman was a Frankenstein's monster-type, how come their son Eddie was a werewolf?).

THE ADDAMS FAMILY was based on a bunch of creepy characters from Charles Addams' classic gag cartoons (which appeared in The New Yorker magazine), while THE MUNSTERS was an obvious takeoff on Universal's stable of film monsters.

The humor of THE ADDAMS FAMILY was offbeat and sophisticated, while THE MUNSTERS was quite a bit sillier, and more like a typical sitcom. Nevertheless, both were great fun...

What the hell is up with Universal. Isn't there someone at that studio who can help get some great music onto CD. I've for one have been hoping for a release of The War Wagon, but I know it will probably never happen.

I agree, I really would love a proper release of Henry Mancini's 'Charade' but it still looks as impossible as ever. You would think that as staff and Executives change there might also be a change in attitude but no, they just can't be bothered.

A very sad situation.

The Munsters is one of my very favorites as well. It's a pity that the story editors gradually neclected the satirical aspect that was evident in the first episodes, and just put Hermann in more and more outlandish situations. The basic situation -- horror characters clashing with the "normal" world, but having no clue what could possibly be the problem -- would have provided enough grounds for great satirical comedy. And let's face it, sometimes the writing was not quite up to the quality of the actors. But the interaction of Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis alone was well worth watching.

Just imagine what they did in only two seasons: 72 shows! Must have been a murderous schedule that makes you appreciate their achievements all the more.

Gosh, imagine what doing a series in the mid-to-late 50's was like when the crews and casts were put through a killer 39 episode season. No wonder everyone looked so thin back then.

Jack Marshall's catchy MUNSTER theme always had more attraction for me than Mizzy's ADDAMS song.

Marshall also wrote some great stuff for the Henry Fonda/Alan Case western series, THE DEPUTY, and, my personal favorite, the way-ahead-of-it's-time "dramedy", IT"S A MAN'S WORLD, where he got to write a new variation of the main theme (or a theme written specifically for that episode) to run under the opening scenes and main title of each week's show.
