Once again, I was pleasanly surprised by an 80's film that I thought was pure cheese - the premise being father Tony Danza worrying about the promiscuity of his teenage daughter.

But I liked the tone of it. The comedy aspect worked OK (I laughed a few times) and it also touched on more philosophical issues, but in an accesible and universal way (the qualms and limitations of schoolbook raising, theory vs. experience etc.). I'm not a father myself, but I'm sure fathers around the world can identify.

Also funny to see actors that would go on to greater fame later on, such as two of Cathy's suitors - Dana Ashbrook who would do the Bobby character in TWIN PEAKS and Matthew Perry, who would obviously do Chandler in Friends.

But the MUSIC was the real draw for me here.

First of all, there was Silvestri's sparse score. The orchestral bits - especially the sneaking-around cues - were pure BACK TO THE FUTURE. But the real highlight was the electronic calypso tune played over a montage of the many boy visits. It's ROMANCING THE STONE taken one step further!

For the most part, though, this was another hodgepodge of 80's rock tunes of varying quality (mostly in a R'n'B fashion). The two highlights were Faltermeyers "Hunger of Love" and obviously the whole reason for watching this flick in the first place: Oingo Boingo's "Winning Side" (from their BOINGO ALIVE album) played as prom night dance tune.

All in all, an entertaining score, but I'm not sure I'll pick up the soundtrack since I already have the Faltermeyer and Boingo songs and since there's no Silvestri there.

By the way, here's the Calypso tune that I speak of. Fastforward to 7:57:

Faltermeyer's Hunger Of Love is a mediocre song, IMO. It's also available on his incredibly uneven 1988 album Harold F. I wonder if he was up for scoring the film? Maybe not, since they went for Silvestri's orchestral style.

Well, to be fair it is only HALF-WAY orchestral. The orchestral bits are usually beneath dialogue and as I said, in the sneaking-around scenes. It's otherwise entirely electronic, such as the calypso bit above.
