Is it just me, or was "Up" the best score written in several years? I went into the movie expecting nothing, having seen "Star Trek" and being really disappointed with the score.

I thought it was really, really well-done. If it doesn't win best score it'll be a real shame.

The last time I really loved a modern score was Spiderman II.

I can't find the CD anywhere though...

There isn't one. The idiot$ at Di$ney have decided not to relea$e one!

iTunes only I'm afraid (thus: no sale!)

Executives at Disney has decided to not produce a CD "because there is no song" (they forgot that The Incredibles didn't contain songs too - Alzheimer is a terrible desease)...

So here we go again: people like SchifyM think it's useless but I created a petition. Feel free to sign. Maybe it won't change anything, but at least, we would have tried...

There is a song, actually, so that doesn't make sense.

Also, it's not iTunes-only, it's digital-only because it's on Amazon's MP3 store.

That's SchiffyM to you, bucko!

And I never said anything about the effectiveness of petitions. Though I actually share the sentiment of those who believe they're useless, I have chosen to keep my opinion on this silent (until now!).

My point was a different one. I believe that the people at Disney are realist$, not idiot$. The suggestion that they forgot "The Incredibles" is a ludicrous one. I would contend that limp sales of that CD (and others) are what contributed to this decision.

By all means, lament this choice all you want -- I do, too! But it's fairly ridiculous to think they're being illogical. Maybe they're being too logical for our tastes.

A mock period song, yes. But hardly a chart-topper.

Don't forget Giacchino's RATATOUILLE had a CD release also.

Indeed. And how did it sell?

The "Saturday Night Fever" soundtrack was released on 8-track. Does that mean the labels are idiots for not releasing "Up" on that format? Times change.

Again, there are any number of valid reasons this choice doesn't work for you. I agree. But they work for Disney, and with good reason. They are not being capricious. There is method to what's making us mad.

Sorry for your name: I edited my post SchiffyM.
I would like to thank you for repeating here your arguments. I don't share your point of view in deed but your point is very correct.
I don't think because I understand THEIR logic (which is nothing but financial) that I can't have MINE.
Please, let me LAMENT wink !

There is a point they must think about: I shall not pay for a download... So they don't spend money on manufacturing a CD but in return they don't win my money.

One part of me wants to hold out for a CD. (I'm still holding out for The Black Hole.) The other part of me wants to listen to this superb film score right now!!

Part of me does understand the frustration, but we get what we get you know, so I can ask this , if all music (including filmscores) go to downloads are you going to stop listening?
We move with the times or we dont, then we miss out.
I felt the same way at one time, I refused to download anything, I download one track from itunes , one time, well the rest is history.
I download all the time now.
I still buy cds too, sometimes both.

It just seems like a shame that "Incredibles" and "Ratouille" get a real CD release, and then he records "Up," which is his best score yet as far as I'm concerned, and it's an MP3 download?

I really think that if "Up" was released it would sell like hotcakes. Lots of people, not film score fans, have commented positively on the music.

I wonder if somebody working for FSM or Intrada could take a minute and speculate on the likelihood of UP (and Spider-Man 3 and others) being released by the smaller specialty labels, as opposed to the big companies' media distribution. I mean, is it even remotely realistic to imagine a deal where UP is released as download only for the masses and as a limited CD pressing by Intrada for film music lovers? On the movie's release date? Or are there too many hoops to jump through?
I like to believe that this sort of thing is a possibility in a future where downloads are the norm, but I could be kidding myself....

If I have to burn my own CD, I want to download full WAV files. I will not buy Mp3s.

But here in the UK we can't download it due to regional restrictions and the fact neither iTunes UK nor amazon.co.uk have it available... and the film isn't out until October over here, so presumably that's when it will be available. If it was out on CD I could just order it from SAE now! Instead, I'll have to wait about four months to get it on a format I dislike...

And yes, I do understand the financial considerations that have probably led Disney to make this decision (which can be summed up as "this won't sell anywhere near as well as High School Musical 3, so let's just not bother" - not that I'm bitter!). Doesn't mean I have to like it or that I can't find it a shame that perhaps the most critically acclaimed score of the year will not be available on a physical format.

N.p. Terminator Salvation (Danny Elfman). On an ancient, obsolete format called a "Compact Disc"!

Doesn't matter where it's from. The quality is flawed. I don't want a flawed recording, I might as well get a bootleg. In fact I might just get a copy of the digital files from somewhere for nothing. Cool.

It's not just the audio compression, it's the digital click that seems to pop up at the end of every MP3 track. And the fact that I have to spend time doing my own artwork because the label can't be arsed. Unacceptable.

Plus yes, as somebody else mentioned, it's not even available here yet so even if I wanted to download it I couldn't - unless I find that aforementioned copy from somewhere. Progress huh?

Then again... hey... this took me about 30 seconds...

Starting to see the flaws in the digital download model? :-)
