Josh Whedon's TV series was a little on/off for me. On the one hand, I thought it was cleverly written, with characters I cared about. On the other hand, I'm not the biggest fan of the comedy/horror combo, especially not if it's teenage college humour that's part of the equation.

The tone of this original feature film from 1992 is quite similar, although not as "edgy" as the subsequent series. It's more typical 80's TEEN WOLF-type territory.

Kirsty Swanson is IMO far sexier than Sarah Michelle Gellar, and it was fun to see the small roles and cameos of young 90's hotshots that would go on to be big stars - Ricki Lake, Hillary Swank, Ben Affleck, Luke Perry, David Arquette. Also funny to see Paul "Pee-Wee" Reubens as a vampire, dressed up to look like his ol' pal Tim Burton! smile Also predictably solid performances by vets Donald Sutherland and Rutger Hauer.

The film is nothing special, far from the sophistication of the series, but has a certain charm nonetheless.

Carter Burwell's score is mostly synths, and I loved the moody soundscapes of the intimate scenes (Buffy dressing up, Buffy and Merrick talking etc.), at least more so than the "cheese-goth" for the horror scenes.

Song-wise, it's a hodgepodge of early 90's "feelgood rock", like Toad the Wet Sprocket and The Cult. But of course, the real reason for revisiting this was Oingo Boingo's "We Close Our Eyes" from BOI-NGO, played over the ending as Buffy and Luke Perry bike off "into the sunset" (at least a small segment of the song). Here, it's a cover version by Mrs. Bangles herself, Susannah Hoffs, and to be honest it even rivals Danny's original version! It doesn't hurt that Hoffs is probably one of the sexiest 50-year-olds in the world either! smile

Dont really remember Burewells score in this movie, but I remember liking the popsongs, especially Hoffs song and the man title song by CNC Factory!??
I might revisit this movie on DVD tonight just to listen to what Burewell wrote for it as I wasn´t to fond of the acting in this (especially Hauer, Reubens & Perry sucked more ways than one) Ms Swanson was/is?? a beauty thou and wonder what happened to her?
Saw a movie called Living Death (or something) about two years ago and she was still a real hotty smile

Swanson is indeed the hotter (physically) of the two official Buffys, but it's by a narrow margin considering everything else.

The theatrical film played it just for laughs and in doing so failed to reach any audience other than film buffs.

The series, under Whedon's direction, worked because it focused on relevant metaphors and real life situations.

I only have the movie soundtrack and that collection is rather good.
