This is the real AVATAR movie! Avatar: The Last Airbender My son has been showing me the Cartoon Network series which this movie is based on (as we have time) and if the movie is done right, it is going to be an amazing feature! I am hoping that JNH is up for it!

I still look forward to Shyamalan films in spite of his recent fare- although I will say that The Happening was not as bad as most claimed it was. Howard writes his best material for Shyamalan films so, if anything, the score will be something to look forward to with some anticipation.

I am quite excited for this movie, even though M. Night lost me with the end of Signs (and that movie was so #$&%ing good up until that point, too). I feel that he banks waaaaay too much on those twist endings when writing his films, which ends up distorting the structure for the rest of the movie. However, he can't do that with The Last Airbender. This is planned as a trilogy with each film corresponding to a season of the series ("Water," "Earth" and "Fire"), so the overall story is already in place. And one thing I think everyone can agree on is that M. Night is very good at writing and directing children, which makes him perfect for this project. If nothing else, we will get three large-scale fantasy scores from James Newton Howard. I think that M. Night tends to get Howard's best work from him, and this trilogy will make an excellent canvas for him to create a sweeping symphonic work of great scope. Anybody who has not already checked out the television series I strongly urge to do so, even if you're ambivalent towards anime. It is very well-written with great characters, good values and very interesting story arcs (and a couple of really well-wrought twists). It was also Mako's last project, and he is properly honored in the episode "Tales of Ba Sing Se."

Sorry to be contrary, but not only do I dislike the indulgent and silly M. Night films, but as much as I admire JNH's scores I find his 'breathy' efforts for these films to be his lesser efforts. But I am ALWAYS willing to give them a listen first. But M. Night's films I will not go near. Why Hollywood continues to give this man and Nicole Kidman money to make movies is beyond me.

Did his little daughter write this one too? Really.... From LADY IN THE WATER to BOY IN THE CANDLES.... Seems more than a little pretentious, if you ask me. Like most of Shyamalan's other work.... However, the JNH score should be wonderful. It seems he does pretty much his best work for this director. (Although, after recent flops, I wonder if Shyamalan - I can never spell his name right - isn't trying to seem more commercial, and access the Kung Fu crowd...)

The man had one good film that I figured out in the first 20 minutes (and I am not very bright, ask thousands here), I had The Village figured out from the trailer.... and then a friend sent me Lady in the Water and I am still not certain I will offer forgiveness for that act of unkindness- what an awful, awful, awful film. M. Night seems to think he is the new Rod Serlling- and so everyone one of his films has a predictable 'twist'... but even Serling had problems maintaining such within 23 minute eps of The Twilight Zone. Hollywood amazes me.

Shyamalan is up and down, but I must admit that I've never really understood all the praise the JNH/MS combo has been getting from film music fans. To me, these are some of the LEAST interesting things JNH has done. It's a whole lot of suspense, sneaking-around cues and drones. At least in these ears. Then again, I'm more into the JNH that gives us WATERWORLD, WYATT EARP, RESTORATION, DINOSAUR, FALLING DOWN, FLATLINERS etc. That's not to say I don't appreciate him in his more "textural" mode too...I love SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS and SAINT OF FORTH WASHINGTON, for example. For some reason it's just this Shyamalan sound not connecting to me.
