I revisited this one yesterday, and it's a comedy that holds up quite well, much due to Dangerfield's trademark quips and oneliners.

Was there any 80's comedy that Robert Downey Jr. was NOT in, btw?

It's all over-the-top, of course, including the stereotypical teachers (the stiff upper lip British teacher to the romantic female literature teacher to the traumatized Vietnam vet history teacher), but it's well within the defined universe.

There's not a lot of score in the film, but what there is, is absolutely delightful. This is easy-going, straightforward Rota pastiche, such as the hilarious circus music for the bar brawl or the quasi-baroque music for the studying to the test-montage (not that dissimilar from the similar scene in SUMMER SCHOOL!). But the main title track is the real highlight here, one of my favourite Elfman compositions of all time. So smooth and classy!

In addition to the score, Elfman also appears in the film with Oingo Boingo at Rodney's big freshman party, performing the immortal "Dead Man's Party" from the album with the same name. It's a fun sequence that goes on for quite a while. The band even interacts a bit with the narrative at one point, as Downey's character screws up the sound and Steve Bartek gets this surprised look on his face! smile

There are some other nice songs too, including the Jude Cole title song, written by Richard Wolf and Mark Leonard.

Of course, the score was released as a combo with PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE, which I did a thread on here:

But many may not know that there also was a SONG soundtrack from MCA once.

Good 80's film and another early great score by Danny Elfman. I have the score as probably most of us do on here. I need to pick this up on DVD, it's usually sold pretty cheap.

I worked closely with Rodney for a good six months in late '99. He was particularly enamored of Elfman's work, seeing it as the template for anything to follow.

You'd be surprised to learn just how different Rodney was from his public image. In life he was a kind, open, quiet and creative man who had a lot of respect from his peers and yes, respected women too.

We saw this one during poker weekend a month ago and it was ok but nothing special. I expected more smart talk comedy from Rodney, the movie played it safe. The adversary was a bore, the fun part was seeing the hair styles of Robert Downey Jr. The score was very classical, I can't remember the songs.

Oh, and Paulie from Rocky was a great addition big grin

In '99, my high school marching band field show featured music from "Back to School" as the Opener and the Finale of the show. It was awesome! Here's a recording:

He, he...fun. Let me guess, you were standing in the percussion section when you recorded that?

Well, it was recorded at the front of the field, where the pit percussion is, so it is a little percussion heavy, but the acoustics of the RCA Dome aren't the best when it comes to a balanced recording, although the reverb is glorious. wink
This was a live performance. I wish we'd actually gotten a proper recording of the music, mic'd and recorded properly. We did that one year, but the band director half-assed the entire recording, and it actually sounded terrible.

EDIT: Hmmm, just realized that the entire video didn't completely upload. The finale reprises "Back to School" in a great way, with "pure Imagination" incorporated as well. I'll re-upload the whole thing for those interested.

I think the "Overture" from Back to School is probably one of my favorite Elfman cues. Its got a great whimsical feel that also has a mischievous slant. I loved playing this piece.
