I was curious if anyone knows the identity of the composer of the library music track used as the main/end titles (as well as a few other scenes) in David Cronenberg’s “Rabid” (1977). This cue was used as the romantic theme between the characters of Rose and Hart.
Incidentally, the ‘horror’ music cues were library tracks written by Claude Vasori and Brian Bennett.
You and me both JC....I've been "tracking" this music unsuccessfully for years. There is a library record called Energie with a track called 'Vulcan' that is used in RABID. It's that energetic string and drum piece used throughout. Good luck, hope someone figures it out! At least there was a brave soul out there who FINALLY identified the Evil Dead Charleston....only it's too expensive to license to even listen to!
Perhaps you can clear-up the "Evil Dead Charleston" thing for me. This same cue was also used in George Romero's Creepshow...heard on E.G. Marshall's jukebox. As "Charleston" is a pretty generic title...is there a more specific title for this piece? There must be other recordings of this fine tune out there...?

had info on it. I don't have time to register and check it out, but I'm sure if you google Evil Dead Treasures, you'll find it - if I recall it was just called 'Charleston' and I don't have an artist, but the guy on that forum did, and there was another guy who posted some Evil Dead collectibles and art here that had it.
Believe me, I would pay bucks to have a clean recording of that cue, and any of the RABID library cues as well, but these damn FSM/Intrada guys keep taking it all!
Some of the Rabid music was used in "Prisoner Cell Block H" the Australian prison soap opera from the 70s/ 80s. I have some of the library music from that, but am not sure which music is from Rabid. Do you have a youtube link to a film clip, so I can identify the track you are looking for?

thanks
Some of the music (the calm theme at the beginning with the motorcycle) in Rabid was also in the KarateAction movie "The Retrievers" and funny enough some music from The Retrievers was also in Prisoner Cell Block H... I know that it is near impossible to track down those library track as they are never named in the movies... The Vulcain track I have though which is played also in the trailer
Inspired by this post, I typed in "Cell Block H Music" into youtube, and it came up with a bunch of great uploads of incidental music and library tracks from the show.
Alas, after checking every single music track from "Cell Block H" on YouTube, the romantic library cue that I am looking for, is still absent.
Of course, its quite possible that this track was never used in this series, althought I did locate Brian Bennett's "Hideway" (again, also used in "Rabid").
As a previous poster stated, the theme I am searching for has a 'calm'ing sound or perhaps better put, has a rather nostalgic/sad feel to it.
I did of course search YouTube for any videos relating to "Rabid" that might contain this mysterious theme, but was unable to locate one.
Once again, many thanks for your continued suggestions.
There seems to be about seven pieces of music that were licensed and then used over and over again. Some of the music is from the KPM Library and you might be able to find the track you're looking for on their website.
TRAP DOOR by David Lindup was used in the following sequences. 1. Rose Attacks the Farmer (24:00 into the movie). 2. Rose Attacks Dr. Keloid (35:00 into the movie). 3. Shoot the Rabid Cop (52:56 into the movie). Out of the Closet (1:15:00 into the movie).
LOOKS LIKE TROUBLE by Syd Dale was used in the following sequences. 1. Attacking the Taxi Driver (28:35 into the movie). 2. The Subway (1:00:46 into the movie). 3. Locked In (1:27:00 into the movie).
PULSE OF FEAR by Lewis Stern was used in the following sequences. 1. Dr. Discovers the Wound on Rose (34:07 into the movie). 2. Rose Writhes on the Bathroom Floor (59:26 into the movie). 3. Rose Tries to Leave Mindy's Apartment (1:19:40 into the movie).
Do let us know if you have any success finding the rest of the music. Four more peices and we would have a complete RABID I think.

What an excellent and informative post. Hopefully someone might be able to track those library cues down. I'll join the search!
Okay, so far I've found the track "Trap Door" and "Looks Like Trouble" from Rabid. I also recognise it from "Kingdom of the Spiders" and Spiderman the animated series. Just click on the link below and type in Trap Door.
This is getting me thinking. Would it be easy for the CD labels to get library tracks together to release soundtracks to films like "Rabid". Im sure there are others. Just wondering if the fees to do it would be low and so would possibly be profit making. I dont know how it works, but just wondering.
For some reason 'library' music such as this is really expensive and (seemingly) annoying to labels, producers, rights holders, etc. It's good to know there are a few other lunatics out there that want this stuff! A RABID album would be a total holy grail to me, it's one of those 'taped off the TV' scores, along with SHIVERS.
I found the one track that I didn't see mentioned above (still no luck with that wonderful, moody flute main title). The one I have is from a library album called ENERGIE and the track is called VULCAIN. It's the piano and drum piece used for tension with slashing strings - too lazy to pull the movie, but it's used often in the film (during the brief bit of people walking through a quarantine zone late in the film for example). I can share or upload this if there is any interest, send me an
I did in fact find these 3 tracks on KPM's website (Hideway by Brian Bennett is also on their site, but a little harder to locate).
However, the mystery cue (ie. romantic/nostalgic/main & end title theme) still eludes me (or rather, US!)
I never imagined it would have been so difficult to identify. As I only rented the dvd & do not own a copy, I was perhaps wondering if someone who does possess the dvd could upload a snippet of the main title, just so one of you might be able to recognize the track or composer?
A profuse thanks to all of you who have shown such a rabid-interest.
Paul, perhaps you can answer a couple of other questions in regards to the ‘Rabid’ library score.
I noticed that Syd Dales’ ‘Looks Like Trouble’ track from the KPM library has 5 different versions. The last two contain an overt 1960s’ jazz influence and certainly were not used in the film.
However, the first three versions range in length from 25 – 50 seconds. Can you tell me which one(s) were used in the actual film?
You also mentioned that you believe that there were seven library cues used in ‘Rabid’. We know about the mysterious main title/love theme track, but can you tell us the track name/composer of the seventh cue who is missing?
Below is list of the known tracks/composers: 1 unknown composer-mystery cue (used as main title/love theme/end title) 2 Brian Bennett-Hideway 3 Claude Vasori-Vulcain 4 David Lindup-Trap Door 5 Lew Stern-Pulse of Fear 6 Syd Dale-Looks Like Trouble
BTW I did manage to rip the first 20 seconds of the main title (the rest contains sfx),about 40 seconds of the scene where Frank visits Rose in hospital and about 20 seconds from the end title (again sfx and a very poor dvd remastering job prevented me from obtaining more music). I then edited the three sections together to form a short coherent suite of our ‘mystery’ theme.

This must be the theme that is also in the movie The Retrievers at the end before the big shootout in this lovely Karate chop-sokyfest... I´m also on the hunt for that track...(same as the main title theme when Rose and here boyfriend rides the bike right before the accident in Rabid) If you find it..shout in my direction (i will do the same)
You're right. I don't think it was the last two (d and e) versions as they are too short. "B' has that noticeable heavy brass pulse. I'd have to say 'a' or 'c'. But this is a subjective thing. Maybe I'm not hearing the 'b pulse' through the tv speakers.
These tracks were made to be edited to any length, so often times the coda or prelude will be unfamiliar to viewers as they would not have been used in whatever feature licensed the tracks. You can't always discount the version because of a transition to another unfamiliar peice.
Regarding the seventh mystery track, there may only be the six pieces licensed you've already identified. I should have said "There's only ABOUT six OR seven pieces of music used over and over again." That's just something I thought to myself as I was watching it. I didn't catalogue the entire score.
I'm actually a SPIDER-MAN music fan so my knowledge of the RABID score was more along the lines of library music cross-pollinization. That library music was used in countless Canadian productions in the 60's and 70's . Everything from THE BEACHCOMBERS to ILSA, TIGRESS OF SIBERIA. So you got to know the music by sheer repetition.
And I would guess that it's not the cost of the tracks which is prohibitive to releasing a soundtrack based on library tracks. We do have NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD and DAWN OF THE DEAD. I'm guessing it's the time it takes to track down the music. The liner notes for Trunk Records' DAWN OF THE DEAD indicate years of searching through thousands of records by one dedicated/obsessed individual. And where are we going to find someone like that on this messageboard?
And Monstrous Movie Music has given us tracks from the Valentino production library on THE BLOB CD. And the ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN CD. PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE. And Cerberus and then Prometheus gave us Bernard Herrmann library music. And there's a few library cues on JERRY GOLDSMITH: THE EARLY YEARS. I think it's just the legwork to find the music rather than the cost.
