I've been using this streaming program for a year or so now, when I'm not listening to my own collection. It's pretty impressive stuff, even the free service that occasionally breaks up for a commercial. And to make this on-topic: YES, there are lots of film scores available as well!

http://spotify.com/

Any other users here?

For those who don't know, you have to be INVITED to get access.

I think it's a well presented and organised service, easy to find what's there IF it's there. The repertoire will increase probably. It's got great sound quality, and there are many albums available that might seem surprising. Much of the early Morgan/Strom material is there.

I was listening to Friedhofer's 'Richthofen and Brown' and 'Private Parts' recently. A great site for sampling material before finding the CDs.

They are legitimate. From an industry point of view, the music could be soundcard-ripped though.

You don't need invited if you're in the UK, and it'll be extended to the US later.

I've been using it for a while and I like it. Originally I started out sampling new scores and CDs I hadn't picked up yet, on a try-before-you-buy basis (and when I can afford them I will definitely shell out for the Giacchino STAR TREK, the Varese re-record of MARNIE and possibly Tyler's FAST AND FURIOUS) but I'm now using it as a starting point to listen to other music - pop, classical, easy/lounge, comic songs, ambient noodlings, TV themes and the occasional bit of camp disco.

Shall we start exchanging playlists? big grin

I really recommend it.

For example, Georges Delerue is one of the composers I'd like to check out next (once finances and resources allow), and by typing in his name, I get like 10-11 albums up (both soundtracks and compilations). ALL FOR FREE - in excellent sound quality! So it's really a fabulous sampler that can tip me towards which Delerue CD's I want to purchase and OWN down the road. Same with Zimmer, who is another composer I want to further explore. Etc., etc.

I've been spotified too.
It's a nice change from soundtracks, which I usually play from my sonic playlist.
Although I have tuned into some soundtracks (I listened to some Christophe Beck yesterday), I generally use it to listen to new singers/bands' CD's, or any classic songs from my childhood that I fancy hearing. I like it.

Just to reiterate: It is not available in ANY country outside the UK yet. HOWEVER, if you have an invitation, you can join no matter where you live (I live in Norway myself). Of course, you'd have to know someone who HAS invitations to spare, but that's another question.

They have recently said that they're going to expand into other territories, like the US.

Sorry to "gloat" (non-UK / the "Uninvited" folks out there..) - but I'm in the UK and I too have been happily using Spotify for some time (and this is coming from someone who dislikes the likes of "iTunes" and doesn't "download" music at all..)

That is of course the beauty of this service - you're not "downloading" at all - merely streaming.

Even on long sessions I've yet to find the ads *too* irritating - and there's always the "Pro" account option to consider anyway if they really DO drive you nuts..

I've "Previewed" many scores on there over the past few months and then gone on to buy their CD counterparts elsewhere.

In short, all good - and I very much hope for those who can't currently get access that it comes to YOUR country soon!

John.

Just discovered it today. Seems almost too good to be true.

One problem I've having though is not knowing how to stop/cancel a track, once started, in order to move on to something else.

For example I tried a non soundtrack piano item but when I tried to move on to the wealth of Goldsmith available this piano piece kept resuming.

Being naturally dim I'm probably missing something obvious.

Uhm, you've noticed the media player in the lower, left corner, right? There is a play, pause and stop button there. Or simply click on another track in the playlist, just like any other media player.

I can't use Spotify because I live in the U.S., but I do use a similar service available in the U.S. called imeem. I have collected many of the scores available on imeem at www.imeem.com/filmscores.

Actually, you CAN use Spotify even if you live in the US. However, you would need an invitation (alternatively google around for ways to get around it). That's what I did (I live in Norway).

Thanks for the 411 on this, Thor. Look forward to it when it crosses the pond.

Apparently, Spotify is now cutting down their free service:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20110414/wr_nm/us_spotify

Up untill now, you could stream all the music for free, only interupted by the occasional commercial. But now, they're gonna limit the number of times you can play a track and, in fact, the amount of free music to - on average - 20 minutes pr. day.

That sucks! Spotify is by far the most common way younger people in Norway play their music. I've been using it a lot myself, especially when I want to sample something I might like. Or as a "jukebox" during parties.

Thor, you could try Grooveshark.com . I believe it works internationally and has a free version with zero commercials. The free version lets one listen to music anytime inside their browser--no limits on time or play counts.

Paying is not an option. 90% of the time, I listen to my own CD's and iTunes collection anyway. It's only those extra times I need to have a party jukebox or sample potentially interesting things that I use Spotify. So I'll just find some other free streaming service instead - even if it may not be as good.

I am - however - curious to see how most (young) people in Norway answer to this. How many will pay the monthly/annual fees etc.? One of our biggest newspapers, Dagbladet, held a poll on what medium you use to play your music, and out of more than 13.000 votes, it looked like this:

Spotify PAY: 39%
Spotify FREE: 34%
iTunes: 8%
CD: 7%
Other mp3: 6%
Wimp (similar service to Spotify, but only PAY): 6%

So you can imagine the position it has up here.
