Strange that I haven't seen this film before, since I like both Goldenthal and Gus van Sant.

It's a quite sober 1989 film about a gang of drug addicts who raid drugstores for a living, ca. 1970.

Excellent performances by Matt Dillon and Kelly Lynch, in particular. The character development in Dillon is impressive - from slightly unstable druggie without remorse to sympathic blue collar worker trying to get his act together. Interesting to see a young Heather Graham too, as this fair angel totally out of her element.

Acting is realistic throughout. I actually think the makers of REQUIEM FOR A DREAM must have looked at this, because many of the "taking a shot" scenes consisted of extreme and uncomfortable close-ups followed by scenes of "floating objects".

Goldenthal's music is quite harsh. Mostly eerie synth soundscapes with an odd percussive effect, sometimes with an occasional sax melody. It's not warm and cozy, for sure. The scene when they visit Dillon's mother is quite funny from a musical sense, a kinda staccato, satirical tune with someone chattering the line "white gar-den-ias"!

Also a whole bunch of source cues, from "The Israelites" (a comment on "exodusing" from criminal activity?) to "Put a Little Love in Your Heart" by Jackie DeShannon.

Seen this a long time ago when we did a film marathon. I too was impressed with it and I remember liking Goldenthal's music for it. I want to see it again, I'll look for it on dvd.

Sober? I thought the film was hilarious! And great, of course.

"White Gardenia" was my favourite track from the soundtrack album, sadly stolen when the house I was living in was burgled and now OOP, I believe...

Sorry about your burglary - it wasn't me I swear. But though long out of print, this is available in my post in the trade section.

Ah, a good film that was shot in my city! Been a long time though so I don't remember the tunes.

I didn't know it looked so "Norwegian" in Portland. I'm talking specifically about the scene in the forest, where they drive out to dig down the...well, you know. I don't want to give too many spoilers.

So what does it mean to look "Norwegian"? The trees?

Yeah, the whole muddy tractor road, the slopes/mountains with autumn-coloured leaf trees. The whole atmosphere. Could have been inland East Norway in early November.

Interesting. Yep, we're loaded with trees and slopes and mountains and lots of green. The view of Mount Hood from downtown Portland is stunningly beautiful.

The burial scene is heartbreaking, but not because of the dead girl.

The best film made about junkies. William Burroughs cameo is pretty great, as well.

This is also a Goldenthal score I wish would get more attention.

Indeed it is. He's quite a good actor (even though the role - playing an elderly junkie priest - stuck close to his real life).

Saw this recently, and it powerfully affected me. Simple, unpretentious, brilliantly told story about addiction and redemption. Can't say that it's hilarious, but it does carry doses of humor to lighten the proceedings

Has anyone ever come across an interview where Goldenthal discusses his score in-depth? I'd love to hear the story behind the "White Gardenia" cue for example, considering that there is an album by Johnny Griffin, and a song by The Cadillacs, called "White Gardenia"

I just listened to this score after not listening to it for a few years. I still like it even though I probably don't like it as much as Goldenthal himself does. It isn't in my top 10 Goldenthal scores. 20+ years ago he named this as one of his top 6 standout scores (the other five being Cobb, Michael Collins, The Butcher Boy, Alien 3 and Titus).

Wonder Waltz and White Gardenia are my two favorite tracks from this score.

This is a brilliant movie with a great soundtrack by Goldenthal. One of the best interactions between needle-drop songs and original score IMHO.
