Love Rahman, but I'd rather take his Bollywood scores over things that are TOO cross-over (LAGAAN is great, though).

Cool! This was a smash-hit album released in 1997 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of India's independence. There's a patriotic feel throughout the album along with sufi, folk and pop stylings.
There's a nice video for the title song which has become sort of a modern national anthem for the youth-

There's also a collaboration with Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan in the track Gurus of Peace. It was one of Khan's last works before his passing away in 1997.

Great review, thanks for the link! Lasse Halstrom movies are always worth a look and Rahman is a fascinating artist so I look forward to watching the film. I had a look at Rahman's IMDB page and his story is pretty impressive...certainly a huge talent in the music/film music world.

I've only got the following two-and-a-quarter ARR scores (the stars, OBVIOUSLY, indicate how much I like them):

(Elizabeth - The Golden Age ****)
Muhammad - Messenger of God *****
Viceroy's House ****

Just like in the Rombi thread I just posted in, I'm looking (for "reasons") into adding another Rahman CD to my collection. I like his thematic style of writing, so any suggestions that go in that direction, and perhaps with a choral element (like Muhammad), would be much welcomed. I am NOT a fan of his Bollywood style, especially the singing (which almost wholly disqualifies an otherwise beautiful score like Beyond the Clouds).

Ta! smile

I have more than 30 Rahman albums and have been a massive fan for two decades.

From your parameters, I would recommend ENTHIRAN to you, a score I did a thread on just a couple of weeks ago:

There is no ENTHIRAN CD so that pretty much solves it.

The same with his marvelous score for BEYOND THE CLOUDS.

Not yet, no, but at least they're out in score-only format. That's quite rare for Indian films to begin with.

Btw, other recommendations that might suit Christian's parameters include FIRE, WARRIORS OF HEAVEN AND EARTH, BOSE THE FORGOTTEN HERO. And if you can find it, the 'unofficial' score release of LAGAAN.

In the only Norwegian phrase I can think of right now: Tusen takk, Thor. I shall investigate! smile

He's also one of the nicest people you'll ever meet. I was on a flight from LA to Dubai a few years back and he was sitting next to me on the airplane. We chatted for a while and got to know one another, talking about music and film. A few months later, when he was back in LA he sent me a message to swing by the house to hear his latest music. He had just recorded his score for Million Dollar Arm. Wonderful guy. Very humble and contagious with his kindness. You can hear it in his music. I also love The Hundred Foot Journey and 127 Hours
