I seem to have vague memories of the series on a Saturday night on BBC1 (I could be wrong about this), also watching the film versions on ITV during the school summer holidays.

You could be right, but I remember it as a mid-week show. It created quite a splash when it started in England. I always loved it. A very American show in the best possible way, so stylish & so sixties. I haven't seen it for ages, I wish a TV station would pick it up over here. With the new movie coming (which doesn't interest me at all), maybe Warner will think about doing some HD transfers of the TV series.

Isn't the suitcase boxset still limited to the U.S.?

I thought so, but Amazon UK are selling the suitcase box for £178.57, & they say it's region 2. It looks like it comes from Australia, so it looks like it was released there as well. I'm almost tempted, but it's a lot of money, & I tend to buy TV box sets & not getting around to watching them.

Dum dum a dum dum ...dum da dum da dum. Love it!!!

Yeah went nuts for this show. I Remember the merchandise you lot refer to. I had the kuryakin mauser pistol in a flat black mini-briefcase which came with Screw on butt and sight. A mate had the solo gun.
Also had a brill jigsaw of the agents in wet suits climbing out of a pool i think - maybe solo had red wetsuit and spear gun. Dunno. All a bit of a blur and could easily be mixing it up with stills from thunderball!!
Maybe somewhere thete are pics of such jigsaw boxes and toy guns??

Unfortunately, yes. Just to rub it in, the movie versions have all had home video (and I believe DVD) releases. Meanwhile the original series hasn't been on TV here since Granada Plus ran it several years back - on the upside, their run included the Solo version of the pilot and the two-parter "The Five Daughters Affair" (aka The Karate Killers - the episodes that made up the movies weren't shown by the BBC in their original run, and most of them STILL haven't been shown on British TV to this day). On the downside, no season one shows. frown

If it's any consolation, I think I remember having that jigsaw. Ah, innocent days of youth!

I STILL haven't seen an episode of this show, but I've listened to FSM's superb scores numerous times over the years and absolutely loved them. I have a feeling that the series isn't quite up to the level of the music.

Happy 50th Man from U.N.C.L.E.--there's even more THRUSH-style evil in the world to be vanquished. wink

My God, how I wish women still dressed like the lovely lass in the photo above!

Speaking of the photo, why is Napoleon leaving Illya down there on the pavement? So he can make off with that Dolly bird?

If only they'd really shot the show on the streets of New York. Instead, it's always the old MGM backlot, where they'd drive around the same block over and over. In fact, every location in an episode of this show was the MGM backlot. If you love this show, you gotta love the old backlot.

Episode three had a treasure trove of guest stars. Jill Ireland, Anne Francis, Richard Anderson, and Roger C. Carmel

The second time I went to the pictures was to see "One Spy Too Many" (the first time was Mary Poppins). I suppose I was seven or eight. I believe it was The Clock cinema in north Leeds, since turned into an electrical superstore, and now empty because not enough people in Harehills wanted new cookers.

We did watch the normal TV episodes at home as well, in black and white of course. It was a bit surreal seeing it in colour on the big screen.

Just started watching this on MeTV. Love recognizing all the big names in the credits. Jerry Goldsmith, Richard Donner, Slim Pickens.

BTW, two episodes in and Solo is completely solo. I thought this was a show about two agents, partners?

As I understand it, much like Nimoy on Star Trek, McCallum was more in the background in support, till rabid (female) fan support got him more screen time.

From my memory greg, thats correct. Seem to recall he was the rising "street" favourite even though mag 7 robert was the star and people were discussing kuryakin's expanding role like the woman in life of brian talking about the meek.
"oh the meek! Blessed are the meek! Oh thats nice isnt it coz theyve had a hellava time"

tg -first film mary poppins. And mum had to explain it would be dark in the cinema.
My older cousin went unawares and auntie had to bring him out coz he was crying when lights dimmed!

Time to reminisce, oh sacred children of the sainted Sixties.

I must have been ten years old when I found my cousin's U.N.C.L.E. "stash" in his attic when my family visited them in 1982. I adored these books and thought Napoleon Solo was at least as cool as Han Solo (n obscure science fantasy character mildly popular at the time but long-since forgotten). The TV show was long-since forgotten too and it never, ever aired in syndication during the course of my childhood. Wah.

"The Calcutta Affair"

"The Light-Kill Affair"

I still have these books and they're a fond childhood memory, indeed. A reminder of those escapist worlds that an only child retreats into during times of woe. wink

Just as ascot-wearing Neo-Edwardian hipsters clamored for more of Bones McCoy, who got promoted from end credits to just after the theme tune credits in season two?

Preparing to spend the weekend immersed in this stuff at the "Golden Anniversary" Affair tomorrow and saturday. I was amazed to see the likes of Harlan Ellison, Fred Koenekamp and George Lehr on the Sony tour, along with Jon Burlingame and Nick Redman. They should be giving the tours instead.

In 2007, TimeLife.com began exclusively selling The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - The Complete Series, a collection which came in a collectible "attache case" package. In 2008, Warner Home Video took over the product, selling the same package "wide" at general retail. While you can still find copies of it around, that item has actually been discontinued for a little while, and there are still many fans out there who still haven't gotten it...or don't want it in the oversized special packaging it's been available in so far.

For those fans, Warner is re-releasing The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - The Complete Series this November 4th in a new "unlimited" (and shelf-friendly) package, with the same 41 DVDs as previously included, but apparently without all the accompanying bells and whistles. Expect the discs to come in slimmer season sets, and a separate case for the bonus "debriefing" discs, all slid into an outer slipcase that we've got pictured below, front and back. Price will be $199.92 SRP

Although you have to wait till the final season for an episode in which Kuryakin goes into action without Solo appearing at all ("The Survival School Affair").
