I watched this film yesterday on TCM. I'd been wanting to see it for years since buying the soundtrack LP many years ago. Recently I acquired the Rhino CD. Previn's music is wonderful in the film and does a lot of heavy lifting to smooth over script, acting and direction problems. Listening to Angela Lansbury's voice dubbing for Ingrid Thulin was disconcerting at first, but I soon forgot about it.

I also noticed that the main title and some other cues in the film are not the same versions that appear on either the LP or the CD. The main title in the film has a completely different and much more effective beginning. It would be great if FSM would do complete release of this score as presented in the film. Lukas??

When I was a kid growing up in Missouri, I saw a show at the St. Louis Planetarium. The music was thrilling, so I stuck around and asked what the music was. Turned out it was Four Horsemen.

I immediately ran out and bought the LP. Great music. It was amazing how well it worked in an astronomy presentation.

I discovered this score on cd about a month ago and was really impressed! It reminds me of John Williams a bit. The stringwork is so emotional! I'm definitely paying closer attention to Previn now.

I remember seeing this movie as a kid on TV and taking notice of the music even though at the time I hadn't become a film score fan yet. I particularly like Previn's Shostakovich-like powerful dissonant and percussive writing. Highly effective music in and away from the film. Reminds me a bit of some of Alex North's work: very intelligent writing, at times quite subtle and at other times full of biting dissonances.

A great disc. Big rich melodies, dissonances, a bit of everything, a real epic listen. It's deleted (Rhino!), but you can still buy it quite cheap. There's no way Lukas is going to re-issue it with a couple of extra cues, he'd sell all of 20 copies!

This is indeed one powerhouse score. Michael hears a bit of John Williams in it, Mark, a bit of Alex North. I hear Miklos Rozsa shining through in the violin line in the Love Theme. We could go on for a while about all that stuff, but in the end it's just one hell of a great score. Is this the one which the composer himself stated that he is "least embarrassed" about amongst his film work? False modesty perhaps. For me, the Neanderthal, I can't think of a "bad" Previn score. And some of his great ones are on FSM. Buy them!

This Previn Masterwork is in bad need of restoration. I hope one of our superb labels takes it on. I just listened to the Rhino soundtrack and boy does it sound antiquated. Any takers, Doug, Bruce, LLL, Tadlow??

I second the motion. This is one of the most striking film scores ever, and so deserves a state-of-the-art restoration! I think some of the previously-discussed differences between available recordings and what is heard in the film is due to the many cuts and changes made to the film in the post-production, thus requiring changes to the score. Not a good film, but what a great score!

If only it weren't owned by Warners - as most know, Previn is one my all-time heroes.

For me this score is Previn's finest hour. Wouldn't it be extraordinary if we could convince him to conduct a re-recording??

Agree with all. What a great score and really in need of a redo that is complete with better sound. One score I can get really excited about.

I'd be in the minority on this, but the sound on the old MGM album is far better than the CD release, which is very dry. Sacrilege, but there you are.

A set containing the album material separately would be good, as long as the die-hards don't sway the remasterers into de-glossing the LP and ruining the exquisite mix.

The source pieces, though all by Previn and interesting in their own right, should be assigned in this case to an appendix. Sometimes that's the thing to do.
