Interesting idea. I was also close to Pete Rugolo. I was his copyist/librarian on his last film "This World Then The Fireworks". I also knew Nelson Riffle and his family. I played piano on a couple of episodes of "Newhart" he scored.
Here are 16 pages of sketches by the mighty Carl Stalling for one of my favorite Bugs Bunny cartoons The Hasty Hare. This gives you a great glimpse into how they produced the soundtrack before the animation was done, including detailed timings of music and sound effects for the animators to match.
Unfortunately, this music doesn't appear on either of the Carl Stalling Project cds but you can follow these sketch samples with this youtube video.
