HOUSE OF CARDS

Label: Intrada Special Collection Volume 111
Date: 1993
Tracks: 15
Time = 59:18

World premiere release of original soundtrack from Michael Lessac psychological drama with Kathleen Turner, Tommy Lee Jones. Initial setting amidst ancient Mayan ruins plus subsequent drama of withdrawn child using surreal images to communicate inspires James Horner to create incredibly tender main theme, then surround with increasingly involved music as drama unfolds. Full compliment of strings with piano plus other keyboards provides basis of orchestra. Horner also infuses music with haunting sound of pan flutes as bridge between two worlds reflected in story. This is beautiful music, sometimes gently transparent, other times dramatic and complex! Horner and his customary engineer Simon Rhodes expertly produce album for Intrada with emphasis on musical coherency, courtesy several lengthy cues and flawless original digital stereo master elements. James Horner conducts. Intrada Special Collection release limited to 1500 copies!

Awesome! This has been on my wishlist ever since I caught the film on TV back in the day. One of Horner's most unusual scores from the 90's. Thanks Intrada!

That someone is MEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE. I completely forgot about this day being an Intrada day then my two cool friends on facebook told me so I headed over. YAAAAAAAAA, what a WONDERFUL surprise for this crazy Horner nut in Indiana!! I'm very glad we have another Horner nut working at Intrada by the name of Roger.

Watch out all you guys, you might upset someone by saying "ordered!" ;-)

I definitely got this one the moment it came up. This was a great year for Horner. Thus far, I'd say my favs were WRATH OF KAHN and NATTY GANN.

Add me to the chorus of excited people. What a time to be a Hornerphile!

The thing that really impresses me is the amount of music on the disc--almost a full hour! I seem to remember, when the possibility of this release was discussed back in the day, that people were saying there was only about 20 mins of music in the flick. Must have been a whole lot of it dialed out or dialed down.

I agree I could have sworn the music was barely 30 minutes and I'm shocked that there was an hour of music. Of course I'm crazy happy of course!!

While the note-for-note cribbing from Sneakers in the two penultimate track samples is annoying, this still sounds lovely, and will no doubt sell fast. Ordered. smile

I had never heard of this film, but I'm ordering the CD on the strength of the sound samples. That plus the fact that Intrada's release of Something Wicked This Way Comes has become one of my favorite Horner scores.

A lot of this sounds like Spitfire Grill which I absolutely love. Pity that he ended up re-cycling it 5 years later for the aforementioned film. I thought it was one of his most original scores. I still love it though.

Will pass on this although I love his writing style he employed here- smaller instrumentation and lighter orchestration.

How could you do that to your fellow film score fans, you heathen? You aren't worth the cardboard that the beggar under the bridge enscribed his desperate plight upon!

Watchout, StevenJ is on the prowl...for suckers too slow on the draw. big grin

I'm really enjoying these clips...must have played through all of them six times tonight. It's got one or two "Horner moments" in it, but otherwise, it all sounds fresh to my ears (never saw the film).
