Chrisyoung-filmmusic.info offers his readers an exclusive preview of Christopher Young's latest musical effort to the critically acclaimed Creation directed by Jon Amiel. Creation is the powerful and true-life tale of Charles Darwin and the most explosive idea in history. Charles Darwin is played by acclaimed British actor Paul Bettany (The Da Vinci Code, A Beautiful Mind), and his wife Emma Darwin is played by his real-life wife, Academy Award winner Jennifer Connelly (Blood Diamond, A Beautiful Mind). The movie will be released in the US in December. Check my website and enjoy the exclusive suite.
Everytime I despair of the current state of film music, I am reminded that we still have people like Chris Young around to keep the fires burning. I sure hope this is released on CD.
This film was released in cinemas about 6-8 weeks ago in the UK, and got some okay reviews. Bettany was well praised, but most complained about too much family drama/angst, and not enough details about his whole theory of evolution genesis/journey. A clip was shown on the TV (a montage showing Bettany studying a chimps' actions and reactions) and the music was very nice. It made me sit up and take notice. Then I read this film wouldn't be getting a US cinema release, due to the fact it may upset religious groups and what have you, and wondered if a CD release had vanished. Now, you never know.
Just saw this film at a preview in L.A. and was very moved by the movie and blown away by the score. An amazing year for Mr. Young, following his bravura gothic horror "Drag Me To Hell" for Sam Raimi. This one is a very different animal, very emotional and complex. Director John Amiel and Paul Bettany were in Q&A after the show and stated the film will be getting a U.S. release early next year, I think they said January 15, although it does not say so at IMDb.
Very much hope this score sees a release. Highly recommended.
Saw the film tonight in L.A. and thought it was good, not great, but good. That said I did find Paul Bettany was very good.
The score by Christopher Young was wonderful. I look forward to hearing it away from the film. I did notice some similarities to Arvo Part in some sequences which I'd like to confirm. It was also interesting to note the score was conducted by Allan Wilson. It's been awhile I think since Christopher Young has used him as a conductor.
For a comparison to this film, you might want to check out the National Geographic movie, DARWIN'S DARKEST HOUR which really is a glossier version of most of the same material.
A little off topic but did 'Creation' get a distributor for theatrical release in US or was the subject matter too much for some religious groups to tolerate and so frightened off the distribution outlets?.

Yes. Newmarket Films was the distributor here in the U.S. The film is playing in Los Angeles for its Academy qualifying run. Director Jon Amiel introduced the film and said it will open in mid-January wider.
Album details and new clips of Creation are online on my website as well as some information and clips of Chris's first game score The Saboteur. Enjoy...
