A largely forgotten 1985 film starring Emilio Estevez and Craig Sheffer, based on the novel by Sue Hinton (perhaps best known for her book RUMBLE FISH). It's all very much a "young rebel" story set in the 80's.

I was surprised by how good it was; how serious and non-stereotypical the characters were, and the fab acting by both Sheffer and Estevez. I liked Morgan Freeman's role too, although I wish we'd see more of it. Lots of potential there that went unfulfilled. Strange how this film has been forgotten while less serious 80's fare has stood the test of time. I'm not even sure this qualifies as a "cult film".

Of course, the reason I sought this out was Oingo Boingo's song "Just Another Day", which plays over the main titles, a sort of "fairytale" introduction; a "just another day in the life of these two punks" that are about to go through some serious transitions in their life.

But I was also quite impressed by the score, composed by total unknowns (at least to me) Bill Cuomo and Keith Olsen. Are we talking PRODUCER Keith Olsen here, perhaps? It's a nice synth score, at times upbeat NRG beats and even some old-school rap riffs and other times (love scene, for example) moody and soft; almost as a backing track of a power ballad.

I'd definitely look into this if it a soundtrack was ever released. I think First Breath would have loved this; perhaps ahem too.

Keith Olsen was/is a great producer- not suprised he did this, being 1985, year of the synthpop producer as composer (Rupert Hine, David Foster, Harold Faltermeyer, Keith Forsey, Jan Hammer, Vince DiCola, Quincy Jones, Thomas Dolby, Jon Elias... etc etc).

I'm not familiar with Cuomo and Olsen, but a Google search gives quite a bit of info on them. Seems like this was their only score.

Yeah, I agree...it's gotta be the same Keith Olsen!

Another "fun fact" is that the film is produced by a company called Media Ventures. smile

Oh, and here's a scene from the film, with one of the actors doing a pretty nice "freestyle" rap:

I just bought the album 1987 by Whitesnake, and found out that Olsen is involved as producer and Cuomo as keyboard player there.

And, FWIW, Keith Olsen also produced the Grateful Dead's 1977 entry. Terrapin Station.

I saw this in a theater back in the day -- and I remember liking it immensely -- good cast and performances. But I don't remember the score -- so will try to catch the film again soon. Thanks for the thread, Thor!

(My favorite Hinton film remains "Tex" (1982) starring Matt Dillon, Jim Metzler, Meg Tilly , Ben Johnson, etc., directed by Tim Hunter. It is a wonderful little film -- Dillon really shines in it. Score by Pino Donnagio. Years since I watched it -- another title to try and track down!)

I'd settle for the DVD.
