Kenji Kawai, Shoji Yamashiro, Yoko Kanno (mostly a song writer ut oh, what songs and also much more). All have written significant music, but if you don't follow Anime and the like they are likely to be overlooked even by this crowd.

Yoko Kanno's best known series would be "Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex", "Cowboy Bebop" and "Macross Plus." She has also done a lot of video game scores, including "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" from the late 80s, which was a massive hit in Asian countries.

Kenji Kawai wrote the music for the two "Ghost in the Shell" animated movies, as well as "Ranma ½" and "Maison Ikkoku", and also the horror films "Ring" and "Ring 2", "Dark Water", "Chaos" and "Kaidan."

Shoji Yamashiro is a pseudonym(!) for Tsutomu Oohashi - in addition to composing the music for "Akira", he's a scientist (holds a PhD in agriculture) and also the founder of the Geinoh Yamashirogumi, a musical foundation comprised of people from different walks of life who come together to collaborate on performance and recording. (They provided the soundtrack for "Akira".)

That list reminds me of another question: where should one go for international score buying?

If you mean Asian recordings, several vendors come to mind:

- Arksquare
- www.hmv.co.jp (look for the English link; also, shipping can be pricey because they only ship by courier internationally)

Kunihiko RYO (Twelve Kingdoms, Emma: A Victorian Romance). Dr. Ryo work as a plastic surgeon before composing for anime TV series and films!big grin

Arksquare is best place for buying these fantastic japanesse scores.

Are there composers who you can really recommend who are not household names (old or new)?

There are many japanese composers I could think of (Ikuma Dan, Akutagawa, Hayasaka,...) - but I would like to mention an US-composer:

Richard Bellis

Stephen King' s IT is his most famous score - but also for example "Doublecrossed", "To Grandmother's House We Go" and "Reflections of China" are absolutely fantastic. Sadly there is no regular score CD available, just his great promo + two adapted themes on a Disney sampler.

Indeed he is I (me...)
As long as I'm in "shameless" plug mode, I guess I could provide a link with some of my music razz

And no, as far as I know, I'm not related to a Colin Towns.
Who is that, by the way?

He has a huge filmography - but to me, he's done a lot of the music for TV adaptations of "Peter Rabbit and Friends", "The Wind in the Willows" and "Angelina Ballerina" (since my daughter loves them and we also have the CDs.)

I'd guess that the more well-known shows he's done (at least something people have heard of) would be "The Puppet Masters" and maybe "Essex Boys", but he probably isn't as well-known as he ought to be.
