Kenji Kawai, Shoji Yamashiro, Yoko Kanno (mostly a song writer ut oh, what songs and also much more). All have written significant music, but if you don't follow Anime and the like they are likely to be overlooked even by this crowd. Yoko Kanno's best known series would be "Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex", "Cowboy Bebop" and "Macross Plus." She has also done a lot of video game scores, including "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" from the late 80s, which was a massive hit in Asian countries. Kenji Kawai wrote the music for the two "Ghost in the Shell" animated movies, as well as "Ranma ½" and "Maison Ikkoku", and also the horror films "Ring" and "Ring 2", "Dark Water", "Chaos" and "Kaidan." Shoji Yamashiro is a pseudonym(!) for Tsutomu Oohashi - in addition to composing the music for "Akira", he's a scientist (holds a PhD in agriculture) and also the founder of the Geinoh Yamashirogumi, a musical foundation comprised of people from different walks of life who come together to collaborate on performance and recording. (They provided the soundtrack for "Akira".)
