Like most of you, I spent years remembering TNG as a universe of musical blandness. But I've been rewatching the show this year (I'm up through the end of season four), and speaking as an avowed fan of Shirley Walker and great TV scores .... Ron Jones wrote some damn fine scores for TNG! They're all musical interesting -- well-crafted and highly listenable at minimum -- and the better portion of them are musically outstanding. Check out the clips on his website, or the existing GNP CD of "The Best of Both Worlds" if you have any doubts. The bottom line is, short of more Shirley Walker, I can't think of a TV music release from the last thirty years that would excite me more than a collection of Ron Jones' Star Trek scores. Only X-FILES comes close. So I, for one, am praying that the rumors are true. Incidentally, I don't mean to cast aspersions on the other composers who worked on TNG and later shows, such as series mainstays Dennis McCarthy and Jay Chattaway. They produced some fine music under the fairly harsh creative restrictions that were usually imposed. But I think it's fair to say that Jones' accomplishments, in terms of thematic richness and musical development, were unsurpassed. As for expanded/complete releases of the film scores, I'd take any of Goldsmith's TNG scores over Horner's III (which I do enjoy, and would buy). But STAR TREK V is the score most desperately in need of expansion at this point, in my opinion.

[ Judging from his name and the location listed in his profile, I think it's safe to say that English isn't his native language. But his English is certainly far better than my German! - Mark Thanks Mark for the "step in". Even english IS not my native language, iam aware of the difference of "wich" and "witch" . It was just an error of tipping (i wrote this very early in the morning, seems to had some sleep in my eyes)! Anyway, iam shure, you will find some other errors in my past and future posts! Anyway, as some people mentioned here before, the musical quality of TNG and the original series IS indeed very different, and I personly would prefer a box with the scores of the original series. But IF the rumors of a TNG-box are true, it would be very welcome too! Its interesting, how many people allways respond on a topic wich included STAR TREK (even if there are so many of those topics in this forum)! Star Trek still seems to be at the top on the whishlists of so many people!

Lukas said in another thread jsut recently he was working on it, but there were some legal issues. He said to be patient and not bother him about it. Ron Jones posted on his Facebook (or was that Twitter?) account that a 15CD set of his The Next Generation work was coming from FSM. There is also more in the works from other labels.

I'm not aware of Lukas making any such statement. I believe his response was along the lines of being aware of the demand but different label rights and not to pester him about doing the release.

Thanks for the extra information Vosk. On ST4 though I really wouldn't want anymore of that, I think the album is quite sufficient in that case. My opinion of course. On Generations, there's bits I had forgotten about however once again I wonder if it came to it whether I would stump up for an extended release. On reviewing it in Legend way back, when it only got three stars, if I remember, there are some good tracks, and some well average stuff. And it's a shame because when you listen to McCarthy's V albums you just think why wasn't there more of that in Generations? Sadly though you do have to take it in company of what had gone before. And it isnt a TMP or 2,3 or 6 sadly. Works in the film, away from it, I really don't listen to it very often..... ST9 there are a few nice bits that are missing, such as when time is stopped, or the discovery of the fed ship in the lake, but it just seemed 75% JG. And this comes from producing a JG journal and liking JGs music too:-) And just for the record I don't play that one much either. If that came out expanded, I probably wouldn't buy that either. Now First Contact is quite another story.

If we get a release of Ron Jones's music--and we have reason to believe that this will eventually occur (thank you FSM!!!)--I will be first in line to buy it. This is, in my humble opinion, the very finest Star Trek music outside of Goldsmith's scores for Trek films. And this is difficult to admit, since I am a great fan of the music for the classic series and was quite happy to finally get Horner's score to Trek II (and Eidelmann's score for VI remains a favorite of mine). I often imagine how wonderful it would have been to have had a Jones score for I, Borg, All Good Things, or the DS9 series. It would have taken often excellent stories and given them a real cinematic quality. His dismissal from the series was, in my humble opinion, the biggest loss that Trek ever suffered. If any of you have doubts, listen to the clips on Jones's site, as Wedge suggested, or just go back and watch episodes like "The Drumhead," or "The Offspring," or "The Defector." We seldom get film scores in general that are this good anymore, IMHO, let alone TV scores, save what Jones is up to these days. Hey FSM-- here's one fan that would love a release of the old Duck Tales music too!!
