Or so says Aint It Cool News.

Cinemusic.net seems to have a lot more details on the matter:
http://www.cinemusic.net/2009/11/06/danny-elfman-no-longer-howling-the-wolf-man-soundtrack/

It's quite a bummer seeing as Elfman had already written and recorded a large score for the movie earlier this year. I hope his tracks get released one way or another at some point.

Did Elfman write and record a score? The article implies he dropped out simply because of a scheduling conflict.

The second paragraph: "Elfman has already written and recorded what, by all accounts was a traditional, grandly gothic effort a la Kilar’s Bram Stoker’s Dracula." smile

It's a simple case of the score no longer fitting the film following a re-edit, and the composer not being available to make adjustments to their score in order to accommodate the changes. There's nothing to indicate that the filmmakers were displeased with Elfman's score.

Wow that's two biggies in the last month. To be fair, it does sound like the movie is a ridiculously troubled production, and the fact the music survived this long is surprising and probably testament to Elfman's work. Johnston has previously seemed to have pretty good relations with composers, letting Horner run free on his early work, and also with some pretty good stuff from Isham and Davis, so the producers most likely just cut up the film and score, especially given Johnston's comments about Elfman.

Really disappointing, even though the movie's consistently looked worse and worse, I had high hopes for the score. Hope it does get released at some point.

This seems to be a classic example of THAXTON's LAWS OF REJECTED FILM SCORES

In this case LAW #1

1.) The Film didn't turn out as well as expected.
Scores are often rejected because the film didn't preview very well for WHATEVER Reason and the only thing they can do at this late state is RE-CUT AND RESCORE

As a rule this is more often then not just trying to POLISH A TURD in my experience.

The cases where a Bad or weak film get rescored vastly outnumber the cases of good films getting rescored.

Also when you go from a score by Danny Elfman to Paul Hasslinger you know that somewhere along the line someone has decided that the film needs to be closer to UNDERWORLD then say SLEEPY HOLLLOW....

I would suspect that the film didn't test well with the Younger (and target Demo) audience.

And they are now dumbing it in Jan, the month that studios dump their weaker product as a rule...

Oh well, such is life in Hollywood...

At least Danny has some material he can use again. Were I he, I'd laugh all the way to the bank!

Who the hell is Hasslinger?

so he did Underworld Rise Of the Lycans which means he's perfect for wolfman movies, eh? And Wolverine.

No. What he does for this type of movie usually qualifies more as noise than as music. Even when it does make it to music it's boring music. This just dampened my enthusiasm for this film a huge amount. frown

Well, this is a humungous disappointment. First Rick Baker's practical werewolf makeup effects supposedly getting replaced by CGI, and now Elfman's score getting trashed. frown And this seemed like a superb project for him.

They should have gone with Morgan and Stromberg and a newly recorded version of the original Universal themes.
