I was walking by a booth at this year's Comic-Con that stopped me in my tracks. They were showing footage from the upcoming NEW Yamato film. As a longtime Yamato fan, I cannot wait for this. The new film opens in Japan December 12th and will feature the classic themes of Hiroshi Miyagawa

The unstoppable Yamato flies again. It would be very cool if Desler made an appearance in the film.

This is the newest trailer.

I was a *huge* Star Blazers fan in the early 80s, and loved the original "Yamato" films (Final Yamato is the anime equivalent of all the Star War films rolled together.)

When I saw the first trailer clip (below), I got a glacier-sized chill up my spine in the first 5 seconds.

The shot of the Yamato emerging from the ice is dynamite!

Me too. I was so disappointed in the early-90's, after tracking down series 3 on VHS, to discover the old English voices from series 1 & 2 had been replaced, and that the storylines were very weak, and that the music wasn't all that great anymore. The animation had improved dramatically, though.

I never cared for any of the Starblazers movies. It just wasn't the same without the "real" voices of Wildstar, Nova, Venture, etc. This new film looks totally badass in the animation department, though. Holy hell is that ever sweet!

A friend at Disney said they owned the rights to make a real-life Starblazers, but the project was suddenly redlighted in 2003 after five years of going from script to script. That would've been the shit seeing real actors and "real" ships using all that amazing weaponry. Maybe someday... I can't stand the Jap-voiced movies. Irritates the hell out of me. We need the "old" crew back to do some voice-overing. smile

The best music for an animated series ever! Yeah...very spine-tingling!

That's because there is a Japanese live-action movie of Space Battleship Yamato being made. The rights probably lapsed or were rescinded.

Read more about that, and the new animated Yamato here;

Here are two great suites (renditions) of the original background music for the The Quest for Iscandar and The Comet Empire series, which can be found on the CD Symphonic Suite Yamato. Spine-chilling. The timing and intensity of the chorals and some of the large brass instruments are a little off and weak in places, but it's the best out there, short of the original mono soundtracks. Out of all the "rendition" releases, this is the best. I wouldn't waste your money on the other ones, since I found only two tracks out of five CD's truly worthwhile. See the last image in this post for an image of the Series 3 CD, which contains the only tracks I enjoyed, the first two. It's not that the music's bad, but it just not even close to the music played in the first two series. Plus, it's way too heavy on piano in a relaxing, romantic dinner-kind of way. Kind of a cross between Chariots of Fire, Ladyhawke and Ice Castles.

Series 1 (The Quest for Iscandar) original background music (mono) - I also highly recommend tracking down series 2 (The Comet Empire) original background music, as it's in stereo.

I also noticed there's a new one I've never seen before, entitled "Space Battleship Yamato the New Voyage: BGM Collection." I may have to check this out, since it's possible the missing music I love so much from both series is included on this release.

Series 3 background music...

Part 1 of the original series' Saturn battle - Such amazing drama, excitement and suspense! smile

Part 2...

Here's something very interesting. A high school band performs Starblazers music.

This guy needs to get a vocabulary, but this model is pretty damned cool...and BIG.

A really big Yamato in a musuem...

Some cool stuff there, Cryogenix. FYI, for whatever reason, the Comet Empire/Gatlantis theme is not on the Yamato 2 BGM CD. I think it's on the Arrivederci Yamato CD (well, It must be wink.

A buddy hooked me up with subtitled DVDRs of Yamato 1 & 2, and Yamato III is in the mail today. I hope to do a marathon after I finish up a book project I'm working on.

Coincidentally, I returned home a short while ago and dug through my box of CD's and found my 4-disc Starblazers collection, consisting of BGM 1, 2 & 3 and Symphonic Suite Yamato. Not sure exactly what theme you're referring to, since I have the theme for The Comet Empire on my PC which I ripped from the BGM 2 disc.

Track 20 is a different variation of the most often-used theme for The Comet Empire.

Track 21 is the exact theme/music most often used to represent The Comet Empire.

Track 22 is usually used whenever The Comet Empire attacks.

Track 24 is a combo Prince Zordar/The Comet Empire theme.

Are you saying you watched series 1 and 2 with dubbed subtitles while they were speaking Japanese? If so, you MUST track down the English versions, as the voice acting is nothing short of sensational.

When the Comet Empire is first seen, there is a longer, more predominant theme. I think It's not on the BGM because it was done for the movie, Arrivederci Yamato. All the themes you mention are reprised themes done for the TV version of Yamato 2. I've got a Yamato CD I've been listening to quite a bit lately that does have this theme (a symphonic version). The version I'm talking about is 2:17 into the ep.

I'm watching the original, uncut Yamato episodes in Japanese, with English subtitles. I'm pretty hardcore when it comes to my anime. With very few exceptions, I'm not a fan of dubs. I grew up watching Star Blazers, (when it first aired here in the states) so I'm very familiar with the dubbed version. I've always wanted to see the whole series uncut, so this is my chance.

It appears you're talking about the "spooky organ" music. Yeah, that IS missing. I believe there's another "spooky organ" version that fluctuates in timing and speed as Zordar's flagship fires on Earth.

The "disco" album, YAMATO: I ADORE THE ETERNITY OF LOVE has the version of the Comet Empire flagship firing on the Earth Armada. And when Zordar destroys the moon. Along w/other cues on the album that were used in the film. As for the alternate organ music. Unfortunately that original great cue is not on any of the CD's that I know of. Plus there are other small cues from the 2nd season that are still unavailable.

I hope someday we will get all of the music. smile

Wow. I haven't seen these shows in thirty years and that music was like an electric jolt straight into my memory. Very cool. The whole Iscandar/Comet Empire storylines just came flooding back.

I had no idea this cd even existed and now I think I'll have to hope someone reissues it for a reasonable price.

Here's the primary music used as a tension builder as Captain Gideon of the Andromeda is given orders to fire on the Argo, captained by Wildstar, and a face-off ensues. This was one of my favorite scene/music combos, along with Venture and Wildstar working the helm controls together to get the Argo out of some deadly vortex.

Here's a piece of missing music from series 2, where (I think) Wildstar leads the attack against General Lysis in the Rainbow Galaxy. I grabbed it off the DVD. The other piece I want is when the Comet Empire is seen hovering only meters above Earth's surface, blowing trees around and causing water to rise as it threatens to land and conquer.

Wow...this is cool. I won't spoil it. Some of you know what's going to happen. Well, some of you may THINK you know what's going to happen...

Here's another symphonic piece put to video from series 2, with the voices and sound effects omitted. Wildstar and Desslok meet for one final battle.
