It's one of his best scores of the 1990s and in the overall look at his career. The House of the Spirits is very easy to listen to, but it's depressingly beautiful in a dramatic way (an oxymoron in itself). If you ever think that Hans Zimmer can not write an intelligent score, listen to this. Again, a real orchestra was used with electronics on the side (it's better that way, rather than the other way around). Plus. there's a bonus with an ethnic sound with lovely guitars and rhythms. The source song in the final cue is annoyingly placed, RIGHT IN THE BLOODY MIDDLE of the cue!

Yes, this is a very nice score that I unfortunately STILL haven't got in my collection, I have only got a 10 minute suite on a compilation. The acoustic guitar-flavored track Pedro & Blanca (where Heitor Pereira makes an early apperaence?) is great, it reminded me of Green Card, and worked brilliantly in the film when I saw it in the theater in 1993. It's still one of my favorite films too, extremely powerful and touching stuff.

I agree, Zimmer-bashers should really take a listen to this.

For some strange reason, I sold this soundtrack many years ago. I don't remember why, because the main suite thingie is absolutely gorgeous. Melancholic bliss. I'm guessing it was in a period of my life where I wasn't really keen on "slow music". That must be it. I don't think there's any way I would have sold it today.

Actually the guitar solos are not Heitor Pereira, they are done by Michael Stevens.

Thanks for this post! I haven't listened to this one in 15 years so because of this I dusted it off and am listening to it now... good score! Thanks for reminding me!

I managed to track down a copy of this a couple of years back and it is a very beautiful score. I like it a lot.

I loved that when it came out.
The Mozartian theme works great, I later thought that was maybe inspired by the use
of Mozarts clarinet concerto in Out of Africa.
Interestingly, a few month ago I listened to a lot of orchestral music by Gabriel Fauré and
I wondered, where did I hear a certain slow clarinet theme with long lines and a barely slight latin touch before. Don't know if that is by accident, but Zimmer uses the same melody.

Nowadays I listen to the score very seldomly, but loved it when it came out.

I think its time for an expanded edition on this one! at least I would love one! Thinking about that posibility is the reason I haven`t tried to get it.

I am not Thor smile
And I don't have his sometimes singular but interesting position to things.

But the old album is representing the score in very long, breathing suites. I like that
very much, the melodies and themes get something like a symphonic treatment, that's great.
Don't remember anything about the sound qualitiy though, but I do remember that I did
not necesarily like the orchestral sound so much, due to performance or recording/mastering, I don't know. I feel to remember that the orchestra could perform much better and more inspired since the score relies heavily on colors, sound, long lines etc.

But maybe for that reason a rerecording with a great orchestra like the LSO (how realistic... smile )
would be something which really lets the music flourish!

Here is the great 10-minute Pedro & Blanca-track. I love the subtle Green Card/Rain Man/World Apart-elements:
