RECALL

I loved this set when it came out in '93. And like seemingly everyone else, I just came across it accidentally, in a local music store. I have no idea how long it had been out before I found it.

Although I prefer the 2-disc 1997 set for "A NEW HOPE", for the two sequels, this box set definitely has its strengths, and I would never part with mine. The previously-mentioned shorter tracks/banding of each individual musical cue come to mind. I also seem to be one of the few who actually prefers the original "Ewok Celebration and Finale" (even as corny as it is) to the replacement track for the Special Edition (which to my ears, doesn't have the same dramatic build and "punch").

I guess you're talking about the 2 cd boxed set that is mostly black. I bought the soundtrack on a double LP shortly after the movie was released, and then upgraded to the cds when they were later released. it brings back some happy memories of waiting in long lines outside of the Avco Theatre in Westwood, first with sci-fi fans who hadn't seen the movie yet, and then, later, with big fans who HAD seen it and couldn't wait to see it again -- it was one of the first movies that seeing it more than once was practically required! And how thrilling it was to hear that John Williams music, then unknown to most of the civilized world. Yes indeed, some very happy memories. And seeing it on the big screen with fabulous audio and a packed crowd of cheering fans was such a treat!

You can add me to the list. I never really got the hate for the Ewoks or their song. Those little bad asses steal speeders and massacre storm troopers! I'm guessing the stupid Gungans from Episode I made people appreciate the Ewoks a little bit more. smile

As for the music, the original finale actually seemed to me like reasonable Ewokese music. The replacement was just sort of generic New Agey stuff. Eh.

Funny how times change... back in pre-97 days, many fans didn't really care for the "yub yub" closing to JEDI, but as soon as it was replaced with new music, all of sudden those fans react by saying, "Wait, I kinda liked that other piece!". I like them both, but really prefer the new "Victory Celebration" closing, as it's more purely orchestral and I never really was fond of the Ewoks singing. On old cassette compilations I would make of the score, I always dropped in the instrumental version conducted Charles Gerhardt!

Oh, and Gungans rule! smile

So does anybody who has the set notice a glitch on the end titles? It's after the throne room theme & near the begining of the main theme.

Yeah, I did. When I was reading the posts earlier that referred to it I loaded the track into Audacity and, sure enough, there it was. For 20 years I never noticed the damn thing.

I imagine it's VERY obvious on headphones, but I don't do my listening on headphones--which is why I was blissfully unaware this long!

I bought a new cd player & wanted something to test how it sounded. I grabbed my box set which I believe I bought in 1996. I didn't know it had been released but then this was Pre Internet for me! I popped in the first disk & eventually played the end title. The glitch had always bothered me but never thought to post about it. I love this set but that little flaw always bugged me.

I know the glass master for a 5th disc was actually manufactured for the anthology (wish I could find the page where I found this out... might even have been somewhere on here). I'm imagining this would have been some kind of send off for bonus disc at cost, rather than sold in shops?

Does anybody have the tracklist for the cancelled 5th disc? Sooo irritating that somewhere there likely still exists many Jedi cues on this disc in far better sound the the botched Jedi 2-CD edition.

If only it had been released...... it exists as my ultimate 'non obtainable' soundtrack Holy Grail.

From: Mercerton on America Online
===================================

Lukas Kendall wrote in the Jan/Feb/Mar issue of Film Score Monthly
(among a wealth of other SW music background):

"And finally, the 'fifth disc,' an object I made the mistake of
mentioning a few months ago. At this point, while a sequencing for
a fifth disc was made (featuring another 70 minutes of music), there
are no immediate plans to release it. It's not dead, just kind of
in limbo. Because I wasn't supposed to announce it, it would not
be a good idea to write Fox demanding the "fifth disc." To them
nobody knows about it, and therefore nobody would care if they ever
did it. Rather, write that you would be interested in 'any
additional Star Wars outtakes and unreleased music' like the fourth
disc in the set. Address is: Fox Records, c/o Fox Music Group, PO
Box 900, Beverly Hills, CA 90213. Be nice, be brief and try not to
sound like you're crazy; perhaps disc five may yet happen."

So there you have it. If you're interested, here's the missing
music that could be on a fifth disc according to Film Score Monthly:

From Star Wars:
- Main Title (first recorded take) 2:16
- More Little People (after droids purchased) :22
- The Force/The Princess Reappears/Ben and Luke 2:00

- Vader's Command (Imperial Fleet breaks up) 1:10
- Luke to the Rescue (taking off from Dagobah) :55
- Vader Shows Up (group meets Vader at dinner) 1:30
- Putting Threepio Together 1:00
- Trouble in Prison (Lando visits prison cell) 2:20
- Carbon Freeze (alternate) :40
- Finale (alternate) 2:00

From Return of the Jedi:
- Vader Contacts Luke (not in film)/The Iron Door 2:20
- Jabba Harp Source 3:00

I love this box, The sound quality for Empire and Jedi is great. I can rarely brin myself to listen to the two cd prensentations of these scores. So sad that an entire generation does not know how great these scores really sound.
Top of my list for remastering are Empire and Jedi. And with Empire a straight release of the double LP master would be greatly appriciatied. The mix for the LP is quit differient and i love it.
Does anyone know if Williams used others takes for the LP or there just differint mixes ?

The 2CD sets are great for being complete, but JEDI was just horrendous and below the standard for sound quality. I have my fingers crossed that we'll get brand new and properly mastered editions of these AND the prequels ...

I agree. And the wonderfull sleevenotes by mr Matessino are great. So glad that he writes about the music instead of only about whats on the screen. As much as i love the athology box booklet i prefer the notes from the two cd presentation.
But im glad we have both, I don't think any release made me as happy as the anthology. and after 21 years it still gives my a lot of pleasure.
Great to have so many wonderfull people hard at work making soundtracks dreams come true!.

Really? Was that just wishful hope or did Lukas actually hear and have in his possession this music? I ask because I understand that Lucasfilm always seem to claim it's been lost.

There's more music in that list that has been said to be lost/destroyed. However, I haven't read anything official about those pieces being lost or destroyed. In fact, there's a short excerpt of one of the Max Rebo songs in the Star Wars Soundboard at starwars.com. If they aren't really lost, their exclusion on the 1997 set is even more puzzling... except for Lapti Nek and Ewok Celebration.

So does anybody who has the set notice a glitch on the end titles? It's after the throne room theme & near the begining of the main theme.

Is the glitch at 1:44 in the left channel?

The glitch I noticed comes at 2:16 of the end titles. It's really minor. It just seems to skip a 1/2 sec. Probably not that much. I'm going to have to pop these CDs in & listen. I forgot how much I enjoyed them!!

I compared this track to the 1997 version and you're right. I guess the glitch at 1:44 was an error when I ripped the CD into my computer. It cuts out for a fraction a second in the left channel. Also, I noticed that this particular track is mixed differently in some parts than the 1997 version...

I originally thought that it was the 1:44 glitch which jmarc was referring to. That's the one I commented on. It's there, in the left channel.
The 2:16 mark isn't a glitch, strictly speaking, it is just a bad edit.

Strangely, neither anomalies occur on the original RSO CD.

It may not be that the mix is different in as much as it is the performance that is different—or a different “take.”

In that 1994 FSM printed article on the boxed set, Lukas did mention that for A NEW HOPE they had the unedited session tapes—complete with alternate cues and multiple takes of each music cue. At the time of preparing Disc 1 of the box set, they didn’t have any notes of which take(s) of each music cue that was (were) used in the final music track for the film, so, they had to select the takes by hear.

In the end, what you got for A NEW HOPE are performances that a different then the ones used in both the movie and on the LP release.

On the box set (and the original LP), "The Little People Work" (AKA "Jawa Sandcrawler") and "Ben's Death and TIE Fighter Attack" seem to be comprised of different takes as well.

By the way, today would be a good day to give the score a listen: It's May 25th!! None of that silly May 4th stuff for me.... wink
