This Tom Hanks/Shelley Long comedy about a refurbishing project gone bananas was - if I remember correctly - panned at the time. I can't really understand that, though, because it ain't half bad. Yes, some of the slapstick and over-the-top scenarios (like the hilariously overblown ending) feel a bit out-of-place, but it has a nice tone - part comedy, part drama (especially when their relationship turns sour from the stress). Interesting to note that it was written by David Giler, the ALIEN guy, and produced by Spielberg.

Alexander Godunov's posh "maestro" character is a bit weird, though, and it feels a bit rushed when he suddenly out of nowhere becomes "good" towards the end.

Michel Colombier's score is quite varied - from cool 80's electrogrooves to more traditional, orchestral romantic/comedy music (I prefer the former). There's also some interesting use of classical music that bleeds in and out of the diegesis (a performance by the orchestra Long plays in becomes score for a scene in the house, for example).

I always loved the upbeat version of Beethoven's 9th at the end, especially when the rock band comes in, super cool! I'd love to have a CD with songs and score someday!!

There is a Swedish film "Drömkåken" starring the famous Swedish singer/actor Björn Skifs that is VERY much inspired by this movie (actually I think that Skifs may even have said that his movie was like a Swedish remake). That movie had music score by it`s co-screenwriter Bengt Palmers. The best part of this Swedish version is singer/actor Jan Malmsjö`s James Bond influenced character, loved it. However I do not remember any of Palmers score though.

A great film from when I was growing up in the 80s. The bath falling through the floor, the stairs collapsing, the scaffolding coming down, Hanks stuck in the carpet - classic stuff. And the score was good too. If this was released, I'd buy it. Which studio was it, Universal?

Like most comedians I guess you either love them or hate them. I always thought Tom Hanks was a wonderful comedic actor. IMHO The Money Pit was a hilarious film . What little score I remember worked well in the film as well.

No thread about The Money Pit is complete without this clip:

Interestingly, while David Giler is given a solo writing credit on the film, the trailer also credits Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel with the screenplay. Wonder what happened there...

So anyone interested in this title? Just re-watched it MY GOSH it's good. I'd love to have a soundtrack of the score and maybe the classical music if at all possible. Sadly comedies don't sell well, but I wonder if there are a 1000 folks out there that would buy this classic?

I'd certainly consider it. To be honest, I'd have to see the movie again. (Like I need an excuse!) smile

Richard Benjamin sat down recently for a wonderful interview for Kevin Pollak's Chat Show but unfortunately the film didn't come up in the conversation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LPKTYgNUFrk

Michel gave me a copy of this score before he passed away. I spoke to most of the great soundtrack labels at the time and was told there would be no interest in releasing it. This was very disappointing, because I always imagined it would be quite popular.

Does it have Beethoven's 9th with White Lion on it? I always loved that part. smile

I would love for this soundtrack to come out.

That was one of the best parts of the film was the use of Beethoven's 9th at the very end with a full orchestra then the rock band comes in to join the orchestra. So much fun on that album. Would also like to see an album out, but comedies don't typically sell as much as others and who knows how much the studio would want to license it. Lots of unanswered questions.

Your boss should have a good idea of the answers.

What happened there was, I presume, WGA arbitration (sometimes trailer/poster credits are done before they're finalised). Either that or Ganz and Mandel had their names taken off the finished product.

Yes, it does.

In the same batch, I received The Money Pit, Against All Odds, Double Switch, Loverboy, Purple Rain, Ruthless People, Satisfaction, White Nights and Who’s Harry Crumb? Not sure how many of these ever made it to CD.
