Hi everyone:
I run a fan web site dedicated to the "Poltergeist" trilogy. I'm very excited to hear about this new 2 disc CD release of the soundtrack for the original film. I was not aware that the 1997 release had audio issues (it sounded great to me!) but I can't wait to buy the remastered version from FSM.
Just wanted to mention a few things:
1. Regarding the previous discussion about the supposed "unused" P3 score by Jerry, the other posters were right: NO SUCH THING EXISTS. The guy who started that false rumor ("Greg," mentioned here earlier) tried to get me to believe the same thing about 7 years ago. Initially I believed him (it "sounded" like it could have been true) but the more things he said the more what he was claiming just didn't add up. Why he chose to lie about something like that is beyond me. I do wish of course that MGM had made P3 on a bigger budget; the movie would have been vastly improved had Jerry done the music and if JoBeth Williams, Craig T. Nelson, and Oliver Robins had been involved. If you'll notice MGM did use parts of Jerry's scores from both P1 and P2 in the P3 trailer and the "Making Of," which lead you to believe you'd be seeing a movie that was better than it actually was! I do wish someone could (online?) redub all of P3 using Jerry's music. No offense to Joe Renzetti, who put together a nice little creepy soundtrack, but it just wasn't a "Poltergeist" film without Jerry's music.
I've got the extended CD of P2...Jerry wrote some cool alternate material for that film as well.

WOW, now that's some in depth reading. VERY fascinating. I find it funny what Goldsmith said, he never even met Tobe, for some reason that cracked me up.
Seeing interviews with Steven, he appears to be a driven, no nonsense guy, he knows what he wants and gets it. That's not a criticism, hell you'd have to be that way to get to where you are now. He seems very strong in his opinions and also Tobe only directing a few things before Poltergeist, may have been a tad intimidated by Steven. I think I would have been, it would have been hard to stand strong on my own two feet with my opinions if I have a director/Steven next to me saying, hey I'd do this. I mean look at his track record til then, pretty damn impressive.

I had a look at this disc in my local HMV the other day, and its exactly as the Rhino release down to the packaging. Which I found was a fine release. I know people have commented and are looking forward to the FSM 2cd, but I am asking is it really necessary. The Rhino (and new Sony) are 70 mins long. Thats 70 mins! If the new release is just a bunch of alternates and source with the LP program to fill it out, how required is that? How much more can be missing from the Rhino, which I assume includes all the major themes and cues? Also, it has a fine booklet with liners about the film and music by Burlingame, and stills from the picture. And I thought the sound was fine also. I wish FSM good luck and I know it will sell a lot, but I really cant see much of an improvement on the previous release(s). IMHO, of course.
I can only speak for myself on this matter, but the sound on the Rhino release is very thin and not a fun listening experience. I've owned the cd for 5 years and I hardly ever listen to it, I actually prefer to just watch the movie again because I find the music there to sound much fuller.
I wouldn't mind a one disc release from FSM, if it means to have this great music by Goldsmith in the listening experience it is meant to be.
And there are a lot of people who'll tell you the lp sounds tons better than the Rhino. If FSM can match this on CD and make it sound as good as their Twilight Zone release, I welcome their release!

This version is to be fixed and done better than the original Rhino. I didn't like the slippage on Escape, look at my reply above to see what i mean.

I think the Rhino one has it's flaus. In Escape From Suburba where the music is just at when Diane slides in the pool, the instruments hesitates or sticks. On the FSM cd, it is smooth like on the lp. The first note of the "Ra Ding Ra Ding".
