Spinning my old vinyl of this, perhaps my favorite Horner score. I remember first seeing the movie at the Odeon Leicester Square and bouncing out of the theatre, loving the score so much I couldn't get to the record shop fast enough. The album is still a very satisfying listen, even with the goofy Michael Sembello song popping up on the front of Side Two. Horner really tuned into the joy and the mysterious aquatic beauty of the story, and it is full-on, all guns blazing heart-on-the-sleeve toward the end. We had lots of friendly alien movies back in the mid-80s, thanks to E.T., but this one worked so well and somehow didn't feel false (sorry, Super 8) perhaps because it is grounded in the performances of Don Ameche, Jessica Tandy, Hume Cronyn and the wonderful gruff old Wilford Brimley. The sentiment feels earned. And the swing pastiche, The Boys Are Out, is just terrific fun.
A restoration of this one would be an instant buy for me.

Although I would be content with a repressing of the album (most of the good stuff, and a decent listening experience if you program it correctly), I'd love to have an expanded version of this Horner classic. Who has the rights to this, anyway?

I have been enchanted by the main theme since day one, when I saw the film on it's initial opening. Listened to the LP many times decades ago.
