Varese did us a great favor and released the complete scores for at least 3 of Schwarzenegger's most terrific actioners of the mid- to late-80's: Commando, Predator, Total Recall. Horner, Silvestri, Goldsmith. However, one more cherished guilty-pleasure 80's Schwarzenegger actioner with a top composer is still MIA...Red Heat by James Horner. I know it was released on album, but it was not by varese and is woefully impossible to procure...I think it would be a great idea to resurrect this obscure (and I'm aware mostly maligned) and interesting score, expanded or complete or reissued. I have ALWAYS met with opposition when I champion Red Heat (or Commando, or Another 48. Hrs, Patriot Games), a heavily-synthed rock/jazz fusion with choral elements and my trusted friend the blasting shakuhachi flute. Love me some Horner action music with quick or wailing shakuhachi bursts! Anyways, it seems like most of Horner's 80's music is seeing the light of day lately, so I'm hoping for Red Heat. "How do you Soviets deal with all the tension and stress?" "Vodka."

I've been on a Horner kick lately because I've been revisiting a lot of '80s movies on DVD, two of them recently being Red Heat and Commando. I really want Commando and wish it didn't demand such high prices now. If Red Heat were to get a new release, I'd be all over that. Most '80s Horner is juicy stuff. Gimme 48 Hrs., too!

A kindred soul. If you love those you should check out Gorky Park also. Great sort of light-rock element. I agree, most '80s Horner is truly "juicy". I also really like his score for Uncommon Valor, which was kind of overshadowed at the time by his score for Star Trek II, but I think Uncommon Valor is the more exciting score. There are moments of such thrilling action towards the end that predate Aliens and reach the same levels of intensity. I wish Horner wasn't always doing such "important" movies now and can't do some silly but fun action movie or even horror...his horror music for Aliens was so distinctive and first rate. I'm sorry he left that behind. He still does dissonance and tension incredibly well, but he hasn't done pure unimaginable terror since Aliens that I can recall. Ohhhhhh, I've had Gorky Park for yeeeeears and it's one of my tippy-top Horner scores of them all. Can't get enough of it. It has IMO the best versions of that particular Horner sound/style that he revisited in subsequent scores. I haven't heard Uncommon Valor. There's a cue on Uncommon Valor called "Parade Ground" that is nothing but drums and trumpets, like a marching band but Horner-style and it builds and builds in intensity until it crescendos...unlike anything he's ever done, except maybe the percussion-only cues in Aliens.

"How do you Soviets deal with all the tension and stress?" "Vodka." About 10 years ago when I was in London I visited the Rare Discs store and bought some LP soundtracks. I found a lot of interesting stuff there but couldn`t afford to buy everything I wanted and one of those I would have bought if I had afford it was James Horner`s Red Heat. So with that in mind I would not mind if an expanded CD release would come.

It's not a prime Horner score for me - on disc at least, I've always felt chunks of it are fairly dull. As far as Horner action scores go, I much prefer the 20 minutes or so on the ANOTHER 48 HOURS discs: it's got the steel drums, and the shakuhachi.

I've always been a fan of the eighties action Horner sound and my lp of Red Heat has been a favourite for many years, yeah it has it's dull moments, but it also has some great moments, and I'm not even talking about the classical influence - Russian Streets, Tailing Kat, and Bus Station are all really forceful yet smooth tracks, with a hard-ass balalaika (or whatever it is) groove present that 48hrs, Commando, Gorky Park et al don't touch, it is very much its own thing, and I'd be all over an expansion.

I've got it, but it's not in my top 10 favorite Horners. In this case, I like the movie a lot more than the score.
