Arrow are putting out a STACKED blu-ray in November that includes the following features:

  • Composing RoboCop, a new tribute to composer Basil Poledouris featuring film music experts Jeff Bond, Lukas Kendall, Daniel Schweiger and Robert Townson
  • Two Isolated Score tracks (Composer’s Original Mix and Final Theatrical Mix) in lossless stereo

Still not the original 1.66 : 1 image ratio if the description is correct.

The cropped image in 1.85 : 1 makes the movie unwatchable for me.

^Robocop was shot 1.33:1. Technically even the "original" 1.66:1 (which is actually a MAR created for the old Criterion laserdisc) is a crop.

I'm just wishing this would be released in the actual 4K UHD format instead of a 4K master downgraded to HD. frown

If Paul Verhoeven had the 1.66 : 1 ratio in mind when he shot Robocop, we can't say that the image is "cropped" in that format, while the heads of the actors are obviously cut throughout the film in 1.85 : 1.

Indeed, the ratio of a movie negative is not always the intended screen ratio, which is why when some (older) movies were released on VHS with "uncropped" images (to fit the TV screen, instead of Pan & Scan or Letterbox releases), people were suddenly noticing and complaining about visible microphones and stuff, which obviously were never intended to be seen. Because the directors (of photography) knew this would not be visible in the intended aspect ratio.

It’ll come eventually. That’s why I’m most likely not buying this one, as tempting as it is.

Same thing happened with Waterworld. The UHD came out shortly after the arrow special edition.

1.66:1 was NEVER the intended ratio as it had died out even in Europe in the mid-60s. 1.85:1 is how this film was originally shown in theaters. And as Verhoeven personally supervised and approved this transfer, he appears to no longer endorse the so-called "Preferred" ratio on the Criterion laserdisc. It does not help that 1.66:1 does not work particularly well on modern televisions as it takes up valuable screen resolution with its thick pillarboxing.

I just watched Soldaat van Oranje in 1.66:1 a few months back. It only had small bars on the sides. 1.33 is worse by a decent margin.

1.66:1 ratio didn't die in Europe in the mid-60s and it's always used in cinemas when necessary in France, and propably everywhere. There are also black bars in cinemascope on modern television, so your point is irrelevant.

To me, which doesn't work particularly well on modern televisions is an image which has been cropped to fit the screen. It's just ridiculous.

I sincerely doubt 1.66:1 was not the intended ratio for Robocop. It's been a long time since I watched it in cinema, but I think it was shown in the director intended ratio in France.

The first time I clearly remember having seen it in 1.85:1 was with the MGM DVD in the 2000's, and I have never wanted to watch it again ever since.

I never nabbed the Criterion DVD. Is it anamorphic? Being Criterion, I would hope so, but I've gotten burned in the past with old DVDs.

Looking at the specs on DVDBeaver, it does not look like the Criterion is anamorphic, then again, it also says it came out in 1998 so it might have been before they started doing anamorphic transfers (their initial release of Silence of the Lambs was also non-anamorphic).

Criterion's first Anamorphic DVD was Spine #47: Insomnia. Robocop is spine #23.

Here are some archives of the INA where we can see that Robocop was shown in 1.66:1 in France during the 1988 Avoriaz festival :

    https://www.ina.fr/video/CAB88002517

And interesting screenshots which show the differences between the 1.66:1 and 1.85:1 ratios :
