Jaws was released to theaters forty years ago today. Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies have teamed up to show it on the big screen in select theaters tomorrow, June 21st, as well as on June 24th.
Saw it last night and it was terrific as always. Not too many people there unfortunately, but a friend in another city informed me her showing was packed. The picture looked terrific and the sound was as good as could be expected (always seems kind of muddled). TCM's Ben Mankiewicz bookended the film with some basic behind-the-scenes facts, and I was pleased he spoke about the score on both occasions. Hearing the music in a big theater was great and it wasn't dialed down in the mix as Back to the Future had been a few years ago.
Saw JAWS on the big screen for the first time last night in NYC. A nice, lively crowd. Cheered and appluded throughout. Think along the lines of the Star Wars reissues.
The sound mix was a revelation. I had the 2000 Decca CD and heard how muffled the sound was, but didnt know how clear it was till last night.
My hopes for the Deluxe Intrada version are high and desired now.
The whole experience was pure magoc. Bittersweet really. A reminder of how the movies use to be. USE TO BE. Sniffle.
