I believe this was on Southern Cross? was it a bootleg?

Any chance of a re issue, through another label perhaps?

I don't know how you feel about downloads, but it's on iTunes for $5.99:

George2000 spent a lot of time on the Dragonslayer thread arguing that the Southern Cross CD release of that was legal. I'm not saying that the release of Iceman is the same situation, but just that the source is proven to be unreliable when it comes to John Lasher (sorry, man).

And what about the Bruce Smeaton At the Movies disc that contained the entire Iceman album? Were the tracks cleared for that as well?

Ok lets forget about whether it was legal or not and just move on.

Lets talk about any possibility of a newly remastered reissue.

An interesting question.

I like this score very much and am satisfied with the album, but I haven't seen the film since it its theatrical release. I was wondering if it represented the entire score.

In case you're still looking for an older release, the "Bruce Smeaton At The Movies" CD (featuring the entire Iceman album) is available at a reasonable price on the Amazon UK :

I would definitely love to see this re-issued! After THE GOONIES release this year, ICEMAN has now moved into my #1 slot on my wish list. It's such a haunting and unique score especially considering its context in the film. Anybody wanting to re-release this would get my support.

I visited Bruce in Binalong, Australia in 2006 - all because I was "imprinted" by his transporting ICEMAN:

I remember reading that the movie was tampered with in post production by Director Fred Schepisi and Bruce Smeaton was really unhappy about the whole experience. He had to have written more than the 28 min that's on the album. I hope this does get a remastered edition along with a new DVD of the film in it's original 2:35.1 format. The cheapo DVD Universal put out years ago does no justice to the score or the film. Bring them both on.

According to Bruce, he arrived at the sessions with a full orchestra... to discover the cut had changed. Baton in hand, he aborted the session and, adjusted his cues, and then re-booked to record his revisions. After he'd completed recording the entire score, Schepisi tracked his cues around the film. But as Bruce tells it, and much to his consternation, this was typical of Schepisi (with whom he continued to work after ICEMAN.)

Not sure about that one,but as far as I know, the Southern Cross cd was above board and legal.Iwill more than likely be seeing John in the next couple of weeks. and will check with him.I know he was most disturbed and upset, when people accused him of being a crook on this board, which was totally not true.

Well perhaps he can produce some alternative documentation to demonstrate that the Dragonslayer CD he issued was, in fact, a legal. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate his intentions, and without his efforts I would not have had Dragonslayer for many years (at least until I tracked down the vinyl, which I did because of the dreadful sound quality on that CD). But if the release was never licensed, and according to Paramount (who would know better than anybody), it wasn't, than it was indeed illegal.

However, as the Projectionist has pointed out, Dragonslayer is not the issue here, it is Iceman.

This is such a wonderful and emotional score. One of the very few scores where the shakuhachi doesn`t get on my nerves.
Since the Southern Cross CD is pretty rare by now, I hope that there will be a rerelease in the future.

I was at a dinner party last night with some musicians; one of the party games we played was trying to recognize themes from well know TV dramas from the 70s and 80s. One of these was "Seven Little Australians" with a brilliant score by Bruce Smeaton. I guessed correctly and they were all impressed because nobody had heard of this composer before, so it heartens me to log onto FSMM to see that many of you already do!!

I use to watch this show long ago. I think it was on ABCTV in Australia. A very good show, with a great cast.

This is a blast from the past smile

I recall being traumatised by an episode in which a kid was killed by a falling tree branch ....

A great composer and seriously underrepresented on record. Here is one of my favourite scores by Bruce Smeaton and I would love to have it if released...
