Well, at least it is, according to this site:

http://www.thewrap.com/ind-column/spielberg-direct-wwi-epic-war-horse-16929

Hmmm. I'm too tired to have an opinion right now. It is not "Pirate Latitudes" (which I had hoped for), but also not that Harvey thing. Sounds a bit like EMPIRE OF THE SUN, which in my books wasn't his worst film by far...

UPDATE: Variety reports this as well, with August 10, 2011 as the release date.

Of course, one of the best parts about this news is that we now know there will be at least two new John Williams scores in 2011.

I'd still rather he did Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II.

Very cool. I remember reading that it was one of my profs from USC, Drew Casper, who suggested this project to Spielberg when he came to USC to lecture. Amazing what an impact that had.

Check out the coments here:

IMDB pro includes a number of Spielberg directed projects including Lincoln with Liam Neeson. Other projects (many of which have been in the works for 4 years) are in search of a script and/or listed as on hold.
These are the current films he is listed on as Director. John Williams would be scoring these films.
Interstellar (2011) (announced)
The Adventures of Tintin: The Secret of the Unicorn (2011) (post-production)
A Timeless Call (2008)
He has 18 films in developement but not necessarily as Director. JW would not necessarily be composing music on these projects.
These projects are:
The Rivals (details only on IMDbPro)
Jackie (details only on IMDbPro)
"Terra Nova" (details only on IMDbPro)
War Horse (details only on IMDbPro)
Untitled Tintin Sequel (details only on IMDbPro)
Indiana Jones 5 (details only on IMDbPro)
Untitled Diablo Cody Project (details only on IMDbPro)
"Future Earth" (details only on IMDbPro)
Untitled George Gershwin Project (details only on IMDbPro)
The Trial of the Chicago 7 (details only on IMDbPro)
"Nine Lives" (details only on IMDbPro)
Untitled Martin Luther King Jr. Project
The 39 Clues
Pirate Latitudes
"Under the Dome"
Cal of the Wild
Lincoln
Chocky

The Lincoln project has been moved to a listing which questions whether or not he will direct. This could eliminate the JW scoring connection. Other films like Indiana Jones 5 would obviously have the famous march.

Me too - and this looks as it could actually collide with the final Harry Potter film. We will see, I guess.

I hope this will be more along the lines of EMPIRE OF THE SUN than THE BLACK STALLION.

However, since this will be Spielberg's first directing project under the new Disney/DreamWorks banner, it's not so strange it's something very family-friendly in subject. We'll see.

Anyway, it seems perfect material for a great Williams score smile

It may be perfect material for Williams, but I think he and Spielberg covered some ground already in the area of war films, so I would have been much more interested in Pirate Latitudes, because from the sounds of it this would have been a rather realistically set story about pirates in the Caribbean, and a seafaring period adventure score that clearly stays away from Pirates of the Caribbean or the romantic swashbuckling films of the first half of the 20th century sounded very much intriguing.

But as I am very enthusiastic about the prospect of a Williams score to Tintin, I don't want to be seen complaining here...

Is this about someone's mother?

Is this based on the stage production that was successful in London this past year, and is expected to come to Broadway during the 2010/11 season?

As far as I know, it is based on the book, on which the stage play is also based. And apparently, Dreamworks has also optioned the rights for the play.

I can't stand animal films (unless they're animated), so not the best assignment I could think of for my favourite director. But I'm sure Williams will manage to get a good score out of it anyway.

I only hope that the OST is presented on CD is C & C. That is, IF Williams composes the score.

I can't stand animal films

I find this funny. I never consider the genre of a film a dealbreaker. I'll watch a movie in any genre or none, if it looks good.

That said, I'm not too keen on Spielberg anymore so this one is a definite wait-and-see rather than something to look forward to!

I used to like them as a kid (Flipper, Skippy, Lassie, Black Beauty etc.), but quickly grew out of it. Today, I hate it when they try to "humanize" animals and relationships to them in some way or other - even if it is a socalled realistic one. Don't know why...they just rub me the wrong way. I'd rather watch fascinating documentaries on animals (like the fantastic LIFE series from BBC that is currently running on Norwegian TV).

"Lincoln" is dead, I'm afraid.
