I remember seeing this as a child on TV, but it has somehow vanished from distribution since then. I've never come across a German R2 DVD or a TV airing since then. I had fond memories of the Williams score and picked it up in a bargain bin several years ago. Thinking it over, there are several 1950s/1960s German/Swiss/Austrian adaptations that also rarely make it to TV these days. The most common version these days is a mid-1990s mini-series - along with the animated version...

As I said in the first post, the most famous version over here is the German(?) TV series from the 70's. I actually have pretty fond memories of that.
There are some inconsequential informations about how and when the score was recorded.
The original "narrated" LP program is credited with "Music Composed and Conducted by John Williams". There are credits for two separate recording venues, one at Hamburg and one at CTS Studios.
The Label X CD instead reports that the score was recorded at Hamburg, but with orchestra conducted by Eberhardt Soblick.
I once read somewhere that Williams didn't conduct this score because of a composer's strike, but this doesn't explain why he's credited as conductor both on the film and on the storybook LP.
