A search of the forum yeilded nothing on this topic, so.....

I love the haunting music from this soundtrack and I have the Citadel disc that shares some tracks from the film (re-recordings I believe) with some great Les Baxter stuff. Does anyone know if the tapes still exist? Was the original in stereo?

The IMAGE DVD had a music and effects track in mono, that much I know....

Hah, watched this great flick just last week again for the umpteenth time.
Love the movie and the score.

I think it is not impossible that the score was recorded in stereo back then but I wouldn't count on that and that the tapes have survived.
Maybe a full release is a job for Quartet in Spain ?!

Would give a lot for this score to be done by one of the specialist labels.

BUT

It's a while since I saw the film, is there much music in the film that isn't on the Citadel Cd?

What makes you think the Citdel CD is a re-recording? I always thought these recordings were from the original soundtrack. They seem spot on to how they sound in the film, and the Baxter scores feature wild effects that could never be reproduced authentically in a re-recording.

The Citadel CD, titled CRY OF THE BANSHEE/EDGAR ALLEN POE SUITE/HORROR EXPRESS has about 16 minutes or so of the score, listed as a re-recording by the composer John Cacavas which sounds exactly like the original score to my ears. 16 minutes is WAY better than noting at all for sure. Considering it's production back-story and it's history of being (apparently incorrectly) a public domain property doesn't bode well for the original soundtrack.

Severin Films will be releasing this on Blu-ray AND DVD in a deluxe package...actual release date tentative.

At work so I don't have the disc here....but there is a note about the recording date inside that indicates it being done long after the film was made (1971-ish?). It SOUNDS original to me.

According to the back inlay it was recorded 1977 !!
The movie is from 1972.

Hmmm, that would explain why the music on the CD sounds so 'original' !!

Maybe someone can contact Maestro Cacavas through his website about this ??
Would not practical for me because I am from Germany and Mr. Cacavas 'does not do email' smile

I sent him an email to the email address given even though he doesn't do email. How is that possible anyway?

Hey, guessed correctly even without a clue big grin

But what do they mean in their PR with previously unreleased ?? Is it really the original score now ? http://trackzone.canalblog.com/archives/2010/07/17/18604586.html

What I'd like to know is which DVD edition has the best viewable
version of this great little horror film? A look on Amazon shows about
50 different dvd labels selling this film - all with different cover art.
I presume this is a "lost" or public domain film now - like The Swiss Conspiracy?
Which dvd is the best?

Den

The Image Entertainment release was the best but Severin Films is releasing a new Blu-ray (and DVD) this fall. I'd wait for that.

Rather mad film, but good score - especially excellent whistling theme from the always competent Cacavas.

According the info for this new release on the SAE website, it appears to be the same tracks from the Citadel release, which is indeed a re-recording. A cryptic note about the original tapes proving to be unusable. That's very sad....

Watched HORROR EXPRESS for the first time recently, and was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the film. Also liked the score. Here's a good rendering of the main theme:
