I just saw this Michael J Fox/Joan Jett drama film directed by Paul Schrader. The score track Elegy has been a favorite of mine for years (I have it on a CDR), but I had never seen the film until now. Sadly I didn't find the track on youtube. Elegy is the only bit of score on the soundtrack album, but there were several other nice cues by Newman in the film. It was really not in his usual 80s style, it's more atmospheric, but it was highly enjoyable. It was also a surprise to find the score on the end credits (kind of an alternative version of Elegy), in such a song-heavy film.

There is surely not enough score to warrant a score release, but it's a pity the official 1987 album didn't feature a couple of more Newman tracks.

Does anyone have the album who can comment on Elegy? Is it really performed by Rick Cox, Chas Smith, Jon C Clarke and Michael Boddicker, and not by Newman at all?

Other comments on the score or film?

I caught the movie during the original release, and although it flopped and got some bad reviews, I did enjoy it. Haven't seen it since however, and have no memory of the score at all, sorry frown

It's not the film they show every week on TV, that's for sure...

This was a decent film, as I recall. Michael J. Fox was solid as usual, and Joan Jett tended to be a little over-the-top at times, but that was fitting for the character she was playing. I recall Thomas Newman's score being a very introspective work, designed to contrast sharply with the rock music that the characters in the film performed.

Yes, the film is really very emotional at times, so Newman's score is very effective during those scenes. It is indeed different from the rock songs.

I got the album for Christmas and yes, it says Elegy was performed by those musicians. The liner notes read:

Elegy (instrumental)
Performed by Rick Cox, Chas Smith, Jon C. Clarke & Michael Boddicker
Produced by Thomas Newman
Engineered by Joel Moss
Mixed by Joel Moss
Recorded at Record Plant, Los Angeles

"Tom Newman" is listed in the 'special thanks' section.

I was really excited when I saw Elegy was included in the soundtrack. It's haunting and painful and it suits the location/time period of the film real well in my mind. I found it pretty moving and it made me wonder if the rest of his score was available anywhere, which led me to find this thread.

Oh also, the song fades out at 4:03, but it sounds like a superficial fade--like the piece is probably longer, and just cut for time. Which just kills me because I would love to listen to more.

Reminds me of Newman's style and feeling in parts of LESS THAN ZERO which is awesome.
