As one of those who was bashed at the time for being unappreciative and a bit of a philistine I'm sadistically gleeful to hear that the whole thing was a disaster. When you blow a balloon up beyond its capacity it will inevitably burst, and this was nothing less than an over-inflated dirigible. A blind man could have seen what the fans really wanted, and at what price--the first 4 discs for under $50. Why would anyone want 2 CDs of love theme variations? (Hell, the love theme isn't even the best 'romantic' theme in the score. That's Blue shadows and Purple Hills). It's okay to talk about 'Tributes', but they have to make economic sense, like FSM's 5-disc B-H set. Now there's a tribute!

Incidentally, there was a lot of talk at the time about how good the mono sounded. Well, a few tracks sounded okay, but much of the rest is pretty horrible, muffled and with audible distortion. I'm not saying that out of my sadistic glee either. After the comments here I was dismayed at how bad much of the mono sound was. If it sounded good to you, by all means keep your speakers because they definitely have a touch of magic about them.

I can understand wanting to make something special instead of just 4 cds and a thick booklet, sort of like SAE's oversized BIG COUNTRY release. And if you break down the cost of what you get, it's not that expensive. Maybe it's the multimedia approach (which I assume increased the price) that turned off most fans, not unlike Stylotone's Deluxe treatment and Deluxe price.

"Just 4 CDs and a thick booklet"? No one would have complained. It would have been every note of music recorded. That's far more than what had been available up to that point and would have been special in its own right. Breaking down the cost based on what the set contains is no comfort since: A. It's still just one score and B. The two CDs of covers, combined with the DVD and book are overkill that merely inflated the price. Breaking down the cost doesn't really do anything when you still have to buy superfluous add-ons that you'll likely never play.

You sound argumentative when I've previously written I only wanted a 4-cd set and wondered if another label might release them. And I made an analogy to Stylotone (above) which everyone knows is problematic due to combining unwanted items. But you are missing my two points: it's reasonable that Varese wanted to do something special instead of the same old release template, and objectively speaking, you probably get your money's worth.

Someone is ten years out. Spartacus was made 60 years ago, not 50.

Who are you responding to? This thread was started 9 years ago when the 50 anniversary box set was released, so most people are on point.

This film was restored on Blu-Ray in 2015. There is a featurette included which talks about specifically restoring the sound. Has there ever been a posting somewhere on FSM which discusses whether the supposedly lost or missing music tracks which resulted in much of this box set being released in mono were ever located?

I didn't enjoy paying over $100 when all I really wanted was the one stereo disc.

But after I got the set, I found I really liked having cues such as "Recognition and Crucifixion March" and "Sound the Trumpet", which I would roll the video back just to hear again.

And, I did play the video interviews a number of times. Really enjoyed hearing John Williams' thoughts on Alex North.

So, altogether, when you factor in the book, I think I got my money's worth. Just wish Varese had made some better choices over the years. They let Intrada and La-La Land invade the space they could have trailblazed so, voila, in the end they suffered the consequences of putting out too much fluff.

The music tracks used for the Blu-ray are not music-only tracks.

I blame Ron Pulliam.
His constant pleas over the years caused VS to freak out!

My mistake, I didn't notice the starting date of the thread.

I saw this title pop up on the message board and first assumed it had something to do with a Feb 2019 Club release.

Ah me! smile

A word of warning to anyone considering buying this enormous boxset direct from Varese:

Naxos uses flimsy padded envelopes to ship, not boxes

I learned this the hard way. I bought the album at last when I saw they only had 35 left. I paid extra for FedEx Ground, $14, and got it yesterday. I've never seen a classy boxset look so banged up. The case is torn open on the spine, scratched and dented, and I can hear broken plastic and discs rattling around inside.

Unfortunately, since the sale of Varese, it's nightmarishly difficult to get in touch with anyone there. All the Varese phone numbers have been disconnected, and nobody ever answers the Naxos customer service line.

I finally emailed with someone there, and they said there's no way they can ship in a box, with padding, so I should take the FedEx package to a FedEx store and refuse delivery of it, and they'll refund me when they get it back. They promised a full refund, including the shipping cost. What a waste of time.

I rebought it from SAE for $10 more, where they know how to properly package items. Sigh.

A shame, and sorry to hear it James, but thanks for sharing a cautionary tale.
Guess I'll wait longer on that Stephen King box set...

I recommend buying any Varese boxsets from other sellers (SAE, etc). The Varese shipping is an absolute joke.

SAE has the King boxset in stock.

Anyone looking for superb Golden Age content at a rock bottom price could do a lot worse than this:

Technically speaking this thread is for the 2010, 6-disc boxset which is now OOP.
The 2016 single disc you're referring to is here
https://www.filmscoremonthly.com/board/posts.cfm?threadID=115117&forumID=1&archive=0
and was mentioned in the "Pretty sweet new Varese sale..." thread yesterday. I ordered it so don't think that I disagree with you about it's worth....but isnt it Silver Age? wink
