"There she is, the evening star. She shines first, she shines brightest, and she shines longest."

For inexplicable reasons, the theme from The Evening Star popped into my head today, and even though I haven't listed to the album in a long time, I was able to do the whole opening theme in my head from memory (which includes the merger between Michael Gore's original Terms of Endearment theme and Ross' new theme). Generally speaking, I don't go for syrupy by-the-numbers predictable serio-comedy scores, but because I loved the movie (and the aforementioned Terms), I have a soft spot for the score. Considering that the first film's score was so popular 13 years prior, I'm impressed that Ross was faithful to that style while putting his own spin on it.

Often scorophiliacs say that they have too many CDs they haven't listened to in a long time, so they downsize. Not me. In fact, this is one of those times where I'm thrilled that a soundtrack I haven't listened to in 10+ years is still in my possession...'cause tonight when I get home I'm gonna pop that baby into the music-maker and enjoy it like it's brand new!

So this raises the question...

...how many more in the world actually own this soundtrack? I'm guessing maybe one or two others. smile

Well ehm... I have a CD!!!!!(-R) of it wink
And yes, it's a beautiful soundtrack although it's long time ago since I listened to it so thanks for the reminder!
The Main Theme is perhaps Ross' finest!

The Main Theme is perhaps Ross' finest!

I'm a sucker for smooth transitions from theme to theme, and the way Ross introduces the new theme layered on top of the old one is just great. You're not even expecting it, then boom, there it is! A good creative choice to merge the two themes like that.

I really enjoyed the film. Ross did one heck of a good job with it and I'm so glad we heard quite a bit of Gores wonderful themes. One of my most treasured CDs I have autographed is this one.

Why you may ask as this cd isn't on any best of lists nor is it expensive to find. It means so much to me cause it truly is one of my most favorite scores. It also brought Ross and his huge talents to my attention!!

I asked Bill about this score. I told him the way the themes flow from one to another especially the main title, it was as if Michael Gore was hired to score it and then develop some new themes to play. Ross said that's exactly what they wanted . They wanted it to flow so easily that you would have sworn Gore was doing the score.

I think most (if not all) of Bill Ross's music is far too much neglected and underrated, including this score - and unfortunately doesn't always get the projects and opportunities that someone of his musicality and talent deserves.

And count me in as the owner of a (signed) copy, too.

Yes! Lovely album. I do not play it regularly, but I'm glad to have it.

I have to add that William Ross' Amazing Panda Adventure gets more air time overhere. Those themes are magnificent!

I got it and I love it. It's great. I guess I will play it right after I am done listening to The Rebel.
I do really love William Ross' music. But somehow he never did any big pictures besides that one Harry Potter. I would love to see more of his music released. Intrada made the right decision to release Despereaux.

I watched this movie again today with my husband. Somewhat sappy according to some, I love it even more now. The cast is amazing. Of course there is Shirley MacLaine, but there is also the beloved Bill Paxton, Ben Johnson and Juliette Lewis. Believe it or not, one of my favorite performances in this movie is that of Marion Ross.

Oh and the score, it is just amazing. If you don't have this one, watch the movie and buy the score!

LOVE this score and love this movie!

Ross did such a great job by expanding the Terms theme into new themes.

Not to get too tangental here, but I have to second this motion many times over. I think this is the single best thing Ross has ever done, actually. It's wonderful:

Y'all convinced me to pick this up for a couple bucks used, especially now that I've got the full score for the original. Now I just need to catch up with the movie.

I don't know about that Sean but I am flattered. So many times I have been introduced to beautiful music by folks here, including you. It is my pleasure. smile
