I ordered the Region 2 BD set. It's not only cheaper than the Region 1, it has more bonus features and plays in Region 1 Blu-Ray players. And the box art is so much nicer than the same old "ugh"ness of the A&E set.

Yeah. What is it with A&E? They always seem to mess up the Anderson titles. I'm more likely to get the Region 2 release, because of the bonus features. All I need to do is get a region free Blu ray player. Any suggestions which one to buy?

I've to a Samsung something or other that hasn't let me down yet. They're getting to be quite cheap. Also a Playstation 3, which has an outstanding Blu-Ray player. You can get a Sony BD player for about $100.

A&E's DVD box design has always left a lot to be desired. They're not changing the 1999 artwork from the most recent DVD megaset for the Blu-Ray. They could at least use the series title font.

I was thinking more along the lines of a region free BD player.

Gotcha, but many overseas Blu-Ray discs are region free. Space:1999 for example can be played here in Region 1. Only the standard DVD bonus discs are in Region 2.

As with the implementation of region codes for DVDs, Blu-ray Disc players sold in a specific geographical region are designed to play only discs authorized by the content provider for that region. This is intended to permit content providers (motion picture studios, etc.) the ability to support product differences in content, price, release date, etc., by region. According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, "all Blu-ray Disc players...(and) Blu-ray Disc-equipped computer systems are required to support regional coding." However, "Use of region playback codes is optional for content providers..." Some current estimates suggest 70% of available [movie] Blu-ray Discs from the major studios are region-code-free and can therefore be played on any Blu-ray Disc player, in any region.

Movie studios have different region coding policies. Among major U.S. studios, Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios have released all of their titles region-free. Sony Pictures and Warner Bros. have released most of their titles region-free. Lionsgate and Walt Disney Pictures have released a mix of region-free and region-coded titles. 20th Century Fox and MGM have released most of their titles region-coded.

Nostalgia Crack!

I can remember the narcotic power of the Season One Main Title sequence every time it aired when I was a tot. The awesome power of those opening chords from Barry Gray... Has there ever been a bolder, more powerful intro to a series?

I just pulled the trigger on that. Not sure how cheap it was when you originally posted this, but for slightly over $40 bucks, that's not bad for that much content.

Just astonished that the A&E season 1 Space:1999 blu-ray went out of print so fast, within roughly 4 years?

The Network version is still available.

This was one of the titles in their recent blu-ray sale.

So I've been rewatching episodes of Space 1999 after getting through the new Fanderson 3-disc soundtrack set. Just cherry-picking episodes to watch, like Dragon's Domain, Voyager's Return, and the Metamorph (nice extra, BTW). The HD transfers are really nice.

Voyager's Return is actually a pretty darned solid episode, anchored by a very good Jeremy Kemp performance.

Checked out some of the features, particularly the dishy Sylvia Anderson featurette. Boy, she did not like the Landaus very much. wink

Producer Sylvia Anderson let it be known that she would have preferred British lead actors; since Grade insisted on Americans, she would have chosen Robert Culp and Katharine Ross.

a combination of his fallen arches and not making a deal on salary might sour anyone's milk. Or maybe it was normal in USA but not in Britain.
She wasnt too fond of 'wife beater' Roy Thinnes either.
