A few years ago it was a thriving community but is now a ghost town? I was a founding member(voted for it in 1993 or so when had to vote to create a group). Are there any frequent former posters from that group on here. I'd swear Jostein was one. And Nicholas P. Zawari is still posting in rec.music. movies?? where is the rest of the gang?

I was never a full member (found the interface too cumbersome), but I believe I posted there once or twice. I didn't realy participate in film music fora actively untill FSM established their messageboard in late 1997, I think. But yeah, definitely one of the earliest examples of film score fans connecting in a whole new way on the web.

I used to be there but ducked out when it became a my-knob's-smaller-than-your-knob forum for Robert Guttke and some halfwit from Germany to toss cloddingly infantile non-witticisms at one another. I've never bothered to try and go back.

I have to say it - the conversations and flow of information on FILMUS-L were generally of a much higher quality than on rec.music.movies. I checked it out a couple of times and then figured there was nothing to be gained from listening to all that yelling.

I used to post there quite a lot in the early 90's but, yes, Guttke and his ilk got to be too much to stand...

Usenet died around 2002 or so (outside of binary groups, though they are practically dead now too), when message boards started really coming into their own.

Ah, rec.music.movies and filmus-l. Those were the days.

Okay, these days are better, actually.

I used to post to rec.music.movies all that time! That and alt.starwars (I think it was)

I was actually the guy who figured out how to rip the music from "The Phantom Menace" video game and posted it to r.m.m., which Ricard Befan quickly found and posted to JWFan (which, at the time, was actually called "Star Wars: Episode I - The Music"), and then I pretty much transitioned to web boards and abandoned usenet

I used to post there regularly in the late 90s. There were ferocious arguments, all the time, if I remember correctly. I think Lukas was involved in some of them!

That place back in the early 90's, through Prodigy I think, was my introduction into the rest of the world of film music fans. Before then I thought my brother and I were solitary freaks. I don't believe I posted anything of significance back then other than, is this available or is that available or who composed what? But I was there. Very VERY young, but I was there.

Not exactly. Best I can tell this group died 2007 or 2008. It was pretty active

Lukas was. I recognize you and hercule. Guttke was one of the most frequent and loudest posters. Who was the Norwegian guy they used to torture continuously and he'd walk right into it.

Most of us left for the oft-stated reasons. It's typical when one person tries to rule the roost with sheer loudness and volume. The gentleman referenced in many posts above tried the same here, but was eventually booted off - under several usernames.

There were some interesting discussions every now and then, early on. Now, who remembers my moniker?

. Now, who remembers my moniker?

Was it Fynsworth? Or something like that. It was a while ago.

Bruce, Web TV was my first access to the internet. Remember the wireless remote and keyboard? I used to get excited when the red email light went on. Is Web TV still around BTW?

Oh, rec.music.movies... Misty memories. Ford Thaxton took a strip off me for making light of Alan Silvestri leaving MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE, Alan's lovely wife later e-mailing me to let me know there was no harm done. Those were the days when even the composers (and their wives!) commiserated with the geeks. Now they know better.

I went in about two years ago with a few other FSMers. It was okay for a while, but then the "spams" took over and discussion died. I would have to scroll through 20-40 absolutely filthy URLs promoting stuff way beyond regular porn. Score discussions were few, so I left. Sorry I missed those World Wars that took place in the 90's.
