Man, I loved rec.music.movies. It was the first place I found where I could interact with fellow soundtrack geeks. I discovered it during college back in 1995 or 1996. And so, how did I contribute to this fine online establishment? I wrote some of the most cringeworthy posts EVER and spammed the group with my radio show updates. Ugh!
Having said that, it was the first place where I realized that I wasn't alone in the world with my love of film music so there was that!
I also think it was the first place where I discovered Ford Thaxton's SOUNDTRACK CINEMA radio show. It was the very first soundtrack-only radio program I heard (streamed it live via Real Audio from my friends' computer... I didn't have an internet connection) which inspired me to do the same at Mohawk College Radio in September 1996.
Yes, that's the thing about rec.music.movies. It may have been a wretched hive of scum and villainy, but the scum and villains were of the brothers in arms type.
Oh wow! I haven't heard any reference to the newsgroups in decades. Are they even still around?
They are around in that they exist, but rec.music.movies is dead as far as active exchange going on. Presumably, most people don't even have access to a news server anymore.
