Did I miss something? I read back everything from the start and could not see any reason to have brought up Garth Brooks in the first place. Why pollute a great Elvis thread in such a way?

(Mind you, I have no problem with other people liking him... I simply don't care much for him. Or "new" C&W, for that matter. More power to the guy, but I suppose his popularity just proves that there's no accounting for taste.)

Who cares if Garth Brooks sold more records than Elvis. His voice sounds like a sick transmission.

Garth is not the greatest singer in the world (and he'd be the first to admit it), but his vocie is pleasant enough and his music is quite entertaining and just plain fun to listen to. His (in)famous 1999 "Chris Gaines" album contains some truly standout vocal work. At times he doesn't even sound like Garth Brooks. I've been a fan for much of my life and am hard-pressed to find anything he's done that I don't like.

And at least he's a real musician, playing his own instruments, writing his own music, and unwilling to hide behind post-production sound tinkering like so many other singers.

(Mind you, I have no problem with other people liking him... I simply don't care much for him. Or "new" C&W, for that matter. More power to the guy, but I suppose his popularity just proves that there's no accounting for taste.)

Ah, the old "no accounting for taste" cliche. Just another way of saying "I'm right and you're wrong," like a stubborn kid on the playground. LOL!!

Wrong. I was simply saying (as politely as it merited) "I don't care much for him, but I can understand if people do" and, conversely, I couldn't care less if his fans don't care for my taste. But, seeing as you saw fit to compare me to "a stubborn kid on the playground" and put words in my mouth, I can dispense with diplomacy and give you more exact reasons:

Simply put, I find him somewhat tacky, derivative and, as his reliance on outside writers for his material illustrates, lacking in imagination. The fact that you can say that sometimes he doesn't sound like himself is evidence that he has yet to discover his true, original voice and stick with it without resorting to other various vocal affectations. If it weren't for the fact that he dressed himself and his music with the traditional trappings of country music, his performances would be nothing more than a poor man's KISS concert. He should leave it to KISS... they wrote the book on that stuff and pull it off a wee bit more convincingly. Country music was doing just fine and it never needed the cross-pollination with pop-rock.

But if you like it... hey, great. Just don't be bothered by the fact that others may not.

Anyway... I'll stick with Elvis, thanks.

I hope all this was un-"cliche" enough for you.

wink

I hadn't realized the anniversary of his passing was here. Just by coincidence, I've been listening like crazy to the new box set --- perhaps it was released because of the anniversary, I really don't know --- called "A Boy From Tupelo". It covers Elvis's early material from 1953 to 1955, in other words before he hit it big. Anyway, it's fantastic; I highly recommend it to anyone who likes Elvis at all. It's not that expensive --- I got mine for $32.99 (3 discs) --- and comes with great liner notes in a nice-size book....

I tend to remember great artists because of their impact, importance, and high quality of their work.

...and also because subsequent generations have failed to produce anyone remotely like "The King."

The Devil? Hardly. HOWEVER, if you wear these:

big grin

I guess I'll be the pariah and say it. I never really cared much for his singing. He had some great songs, but so often to me he came off as doing a Bing Crosby vocal take. No offense intended, his singing just wasn't for me with the exception of some of his earlier stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I miss him and it was heartbreaking what happened to him. RIP

These film score nerds don't get/understand it, but the world is composed of two types of people: those who are Elvis fans and those who take His influence and impact on music for granted.

No, thats wrong - there are two types of people in this world - those with loaded guns ...and those who dig. wink
