Hey guys,

I recently dug out all my long-OOP CDs of the scores to the Japanese Yamato series (both TV and the films), and was having a great time getting re-acquainted with the music. I became a huge fan of the American version of the show (Star Blazers) in the 1980s, and was wondering if other people here were fans.

Some of the themes and fanfares are so exciting and iconic that they give me the same thrill as hearing various Star Trek or Star Wars cues.

So... chime in!

That franchise came up in my "spaceship" thread (which currently only has myself replying to myself! smile), but I'd like to check it out. I'm sure there's some great music too.

Any idea if there will be a CD release for the new live action film?

I'm a huge fan of the Yamato music. Whenever I see Yamato CDs in the used bins, I snap them up.

I'm getting more jazzed to see the new live-action Yamato. I think it's a fan-modified trailer, but great use of the music.

And wouldn't it be interesting to wake up to this...

I love Japanese film music, and for whatever reason, this does absolutely nothing for me. I am not even sure why. Maybe it sounds like the Japanese equivalent of New Age Music to me? I would much prefer to listen to Ultraman music by Fuyuki or Miyauchi, which, while childish in spots, is full of invention. I have about six of the Yamato albums -- the ones that everyone told me are the best -- and they just fall flat on my ears. That's what makes the world go round, though -- one person's meat is another person's lima beans.

Any idea if there will be a CD release for the new live action film?

The new trailer (which gave me goosebumps!) seems to show a couple of CDs available when the film is out.

I'd love to see a subtitled version of both this and the new animated Yamato film that came out last December. The latter is on DVD, but in a Japanese language-only version (last I heard.)

If you watched the first two seasons of Star Blazers and have seen the Yamato films, the music is indelibly etched with the action and emotions of the show/films, and definitely has greater resonance.

Big fan of the music and I have some of the CD's. I think the music to the 2nd season (Comet Empire) was the best.

Star Blazers used to air on WCIX Miami back around 1979-80 and was *the* show among the eight year-olds (including eight-year-old me)! It was on at 6:30AM, so there would be plenty to talk about in the schoolyard. I haven't seen it since then! However, the imagery of the show: the slo-mo laser blasts, the radioactive meteors journeying endlessly towards Earth, the depressed old captain, Derek Wildstar, and that bad-ass city with built on a half moon with a swirling defense field. It was epic! Intense, too.

I just received the live action motion picture score and its epic! If you love Williams, Horner, Poledouris you should love this score.

While Japanese scores are less complex than their American counter parts, Space Battleship Yamato is still a worthy contender with sweeping themes and pulsating action cues.

Without question this is the kind of music we grew up loving, and miss so dearly in today's American scores.

Number one BEST score of the year!

Man, I'm gonna have to get this!

I'd also love to get my hands on subtitled DVDs of both the new live-action film (when it's available) and the animated revival film from a year ago (and its score as well.)

I can't imagine the live action movie not getting a release in the west sooner or later. I'm sure it will be dubbed, but I hope for a subtitled option as well.

I did my best to find English translations of the track titles, using Japanese/English translators and web searches. But I'm unfamiliar with some of the proper nouns, like Gamilasroid (?), Gamirasu and Dessler. And some of them had alternate possibilities: "Ship of Hope" or "Wanted Ship", "Fire the Wave Cannon" or "The Wave Motion Gun Discharges", etc. I tried to make them sound not too clunky, but can only hope I retained the spirit of the original titles. If anyone who actually reads Japanese wants to suggest any corrections I'm happy to hear them:
