I watched this show. I thought the first two seasons were very solid. Then it kind of lost its way. Some of the more interesting characters fell by the wayside. The final (short) season sort of redeemed the series. It was good but it was a little too late by then.

I liked Boardwalk a lot, but thought each previous season was better than the following. The last season I found to be pretty boring, formulated, and too interested in giving 'wrap up' cameos to all the characters in an attempt to say goodbye. But that did not make for compelling viewing. The first 2 seasons in particular are ground breaking and really interesting.

A part of what made Boardwalk so good was the attention to set design and recreating the 1920's atmosphere of clubs, shops, arcades, festivals, the road and vehicles, etc. And the actors and actresses were absolute knock outs in their roles. It's one for the ages, no doubt.

This show went off the rails when Nucky shot Jimmy Darmody. Seems Terence Winter wanted to turn Nucky into a full-fledged gangster, but other stewards of the show (Howard Korder? Scorsese?) weren't really down with the whole effete corrupt pol turning into a strongman angle.

It never worked, and indeed the show got canceled softly with a desultory 8 episode cancellation denoument.

Boardwalk Empire always represented the kernel of a great show, but only briefly touched that potential. A good lesson learned by some of its major players, I hope.
