Okay, I doubly confirmed. I watched my iTunes digital copy tonight. It's the current 4K master. I still hate the music.
My mistake- the iTunes shows 4K which I assume is the new print. Watched it again last night. I do like the music but can see why it would not be appealing to others. The little xylophone flute gestures while Galen is looking for Vermithrax in the lair is oddly ambivalent. Definitely not foreshadowing what is to come and only when the dragon rises behind him does North kick in with the piano bass notes and brass statement at the confrontation. But I still dig it nonetheless.
Finally Dragonslayer in Blu-Ray!!! My favourite fantasy film of all time with its as of yet unsurpassed dragon. Alex North’s score is in a class of its own. A symphonic masterpiece.

Yeah, I find the score works against the film. The music largely sounds out of place and doesn't represent the scenes they're underscoring. It works against the visuals and constantly takes me out of the film. I know the score has many fans. I do love the "Godzilla" type motif for the dragon.

The Vermithrax motif is amazing. The first time I saw the film and that theme accompanied the title card, I knew I was in for a good film. I don't mind the Prokofiev-ish trek music underscoring Galen's ineptitude, and the love them is quite beautiful. The music that underscores the first sacrifice is stellar IMO. I agree that the lead-up to the music in the lair was oddly out of place. and while I love that big jazz chord musically, it was weird to hear it after Galen defeats Tyrian.
I read on Wikipedia that North reused a lot of material he recorded for his score 2001 here. Is that true?
"Into The Sunset" reused music from "Space Station Docking" for example. "Night Terrors" has strong similarities to some of the creepy moments in DRAGONSLAYER.
North also used other portions of 2001 in SHOES OF THE FISHERMAN.
