Well, armchair expert syndrome is nothing new and certainly not restricted to (film) music.
I think movies and sports are subject to far worse.
Those who can, 'do' ......and everybody else, well they just go over to youtube and click 'dislike'.

Received this one two weeks ago and have been playing it non-stop! I thought I'd heard their best performance with Lawrence of Arabia but this one blew me away completely. How much better can they get! I'm sure Basil is smiling up there...

This is as good as it gets. Brilliant producing and performance. There is nothing wrong with this CD set.

Let us repeat. There is nothing wrong with this CD set.

Unfortunately, the difference between clicking dislike and a FSM board member talking about sine curves in microphone recording quality is about 30,000 angry, ignorant words.

Oh, I know ...I'm just (kind of) kidding about youtube as it's a personal pet hate.
There are plenty of ignorant words written all around us, like I said, I find movies and sports to receive far worse, so much expertise and wisdom presented from a hotdog stuffed mouth on the sidelines or the couch, it's never gonna change though.
On the other hand, there are plenty of people who do understand the process and who have grown with the technology surrounding it and do actually know what they're talking about but even they are slammed if it goes against the groove.
I've seen a lot of anger here by some members though because it's as if any criticisms put forward is a slight against their own ability to listen, process and understand, because if there was something wrong, well surely 'they' would of noticed too.

I think its more the armchair critic slant than anything else. There was a time when fans were much more appreciative of the fruits they were given instead of being self-aggrandizing sound engineers with a fifty cent opinion and an internet connection.

I'm not against the notion of gratitude, but what's so wrong with simply mentioning a complaint?

I know Simple Mind went on and on and on and on and on about the thing a few months ago.

But with some of you people here it seems as if any criticism against a product like this is equal to some kind of a personal offence.
Lighten up, please.

I made an observation, and I mentioned something that seemed off to me.
That's about it; no semi-technical jargon that barely has any place in a conversation with an average Joe, just 'The Orgy' as a point of reference.

As for gratitude, I also thought it was a shame about the few missing cues on the score album to 'How To Train Your Dragon'.
Didn't make me any less happy to own it, and it certainly didn't make me go on a crusade against Varèse Sarabande for that.

Dear sir or madam,

You may be right.

Sincerely,

H. L. Mencken

And indeed, and it's extremely frustrating to see people get flamed for it, whereas in the next thread those very same people will whine whine whine about all the "horrid bitching"

And that's why I'm glad I offended someone in that respect.
Really. I say that I like an album, but mention something negative about it.
Then I'm automatically an ungrateful self-proclaimed sound engineer with 5 spectacular seconds of experience?

God forbid I try to learn something about sound by actually listening to something.

Extreme voices are the loudest, and sometimes they have a way of clouding issues. I love the new recording of Conan the Barbarian. I think that the arrangements and performances are fantastic, and for the most part the sound is crisp and clean. To say that I have absolutely no issues with the sound wouldn't be true; there are a few anomalies here and there that I have noticed. They are too minor for me to to really be bothered overmuch about, and instead I enjoy the recording for everything it does right, which is capture a bold and committed performance of some of my favorite music ever.

Perhaps the best complement I can give James Fitzpatrick and his crew is that the new recording has given me a new perspective and greater insight into a score that I thought I knew inside and out, and gave me the ability to listen to an old favorite for the first time again.

I look forward to the new recording of Conan the Destroyer (as well as the other upcoming Tadlow releases) with great anticipation.

I have a question for James Fitzpatrick. Will The Destroyer have the original movie art as did Fall of the Roman Empire?

And will Destroyer be released by the end of the year? wink

New to the forum here after having read it for years. :-)

Anyway, I noticed there were complaints about the sound quality (digital distortion) of this disc. I can say that I have played it a number of times and found it to be an excellent recording, and I could not hear any artifacts such as distortion. However, I noticed that the signal peaked on quite a few loud instances in the score, but whether the signal was distorted because of those peaks or not, I was unable to notice.

Overall, a fantastic score and achievement by Raine and the Prague orchestra. I look forward to more excellent stuff coming from the same source, how about Jesus of Nazareth (Maurice Jarre)?

Ack! I thought this might be the imminent Intrada announcement! Alas, the wait continues a little longer.

I've said it before; the Prometheus recording is beyond excellent. Whatever distortions there may be haven't hindered my enjoyment of this set one iota. I still long for Intrada's original score treatment, but when it arrives, the Prometheus will sit rightfully next to it on my Shelf of Steel.

I am taking this opportunity to respond to various post since I'm uncertain as to the reliability of my Italian internet connection.

That said, I have found the Tadlow rerecording to also be absolutely amazing. More so the Conan the Destroyer relative to the abysmal OST and with the inclusion of the originally intended choir element into the Dagoth Ceremony cue. That blew my socks off and still does every time I hear it.

Bumping this thread a year later... because this is a fantastic CD. While I still feel the mastering is not what it could be, that's a very small complaint, and it doesn't hinder my enjoyment of the music. Not a bit.

My thanks to all involved in its making!

The mastering is all it can be, it's the original recording that's deficient. Intrada's work is top notch.

Wrong album, friend. This is the rerecording.
