I asked the same question weeks ago on this board and recieved no response. Does anyone know? Supposedly years ago a wide screen laser edition was considered but was scrapped when complete source materials in good condition could not be located. The DVD's running time indicated by Columbia is 137 minutes, which leads me to belive the Overture and intermission may be present. I hope so, this underated epic deserves special treatment.

Hi Paul:

I cannot answer your question, directly, about whether, or not, the Overture and Intermezzo are on the disc. Initial scuttlebut is that it is a poor transfer. Too bad, as this film is a little more intellectually challenging (script by Christoper Fry) than your average religiosity epic.

I recall that Ennio Morricone did the arrangement of Nascimbene's Overture on the old Citadel and Colpix lps. I do not know whether this was a re-recording.

You can find a review of the DVD at <www.digitallyobsessed.com>. Click on the Home Page under (Scenes).

In any case, I sent an Email to the reviewer. If (s)he responds, I will post the information to the board. The soundtrack is in stereo, but apparently the equalization has clipped the upper and lower ends, as well as there being a layer change that interrupts one music cue.

(That was fast! I did hear back from Digitally Obsessed and neither the Overture or Intermezzo appear on the DVD. Thanks to Mark Zimmer for responding so quickly. "Zimmer", now where have I heard that name?)

A la Peter Hunt with 1776's "Piddle, twiddle," Richard Fleischer's demanded that BARABBAS's solar eclipse be shortened because modern audiences would be confused by anything too quiet or dark...

Thanx Boadicea for the info.

I guess that i will not buy it now. I have both the Colpix LP and the latter CD. I was always disapointed that the CD did not have the track "Musical Examples" that was on the LP.

FYI...
Barabbas was given the full Roadshow treatment in the early 60's with overture, intermission music and souvenir program! It played for only a few weeks on the reserved seat showing as the critics were not kind. The original running time was reported at the time to be 144 minutes but I'm not sure if this includes the overture and intermission music. Since i have not seen the film since that roadshow engagement i have no idea what has been cut. Too bad Columbia couldn't do a better job.

I also saw the roadshow version in NYC, along with KING OF KINGS, I was quite young and both movies had a lasting effect with me.

If you understand Italian, "Musical Examples" [6'17"] does appear on the Legend CD of BARABBAS, which also includes ALEXANDER THE GREAT and CONSTANTINE AND THE CROSS (Legend CD 5).

The major loss, on CD, is the "Overture"; it does not appear on either the Legend or DRG releases, although it is on both lps. Mantovani (!) also recorded a cover version of the Overture, if memory serves.

Although the DVD contains stereo effects and directional dialogue, the music seems to be mono, as was the soundtrack LP and CD reissue. Was the music ever recorded in stereo?
