He really does like to give brief acceptance speeches, doesn't he?razz

he looks pretty cool, not so much revealing his humility and modesty as he uses to later in his career, but appearing with a more detached, not at all impressed-by-hollywood tune.

Great that he also thanks and gives credit to Herb Spencer, even calling him his friend.

Does anybody know more about the relationship between those two?

Actually, now that I've watched the video again, never mind the brief acceptance speech. What I want to know is how he got to the podium in four seconds! Presumably he was backstage already, but why?

yes, indeed, that is really strange.
Maybe in the 70ties the show was different and all nominees waited backstage?

Yes, that could be it. They did a similar thing with selected technical categories a few years ago, by having all the nominees lined up on stage, and the winner stepping forward to claim the Oscar. Personally, I thought it was ludicrous. Regardless of the 'importance' of the category, each winner deserves to be able to take their victory walk between their seat and the podium.

yeah, you are right.
so Williams' detached and not-impressed expression is quite fitting smile

Williams was conducting the Academy Awards Orchestra that year, which would explain why he got to the stage so quickly...

I'm hoping they'll upload his win for E.T. soon...SW & Schindler's List are already there.

Still such a thrilling moment!

And with Williams overseeing the orchestra that night, the music for the moment was right on!

Not too many people seem to know that John Williams was married for nearly 18 years to actress Barbara Ruick, one of the secondary leads in the movie version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's "Carousel" (she marries Mr. Snow). They were married, with children, until she tragically died (3-3-74 - nearly forty years ago!). Always loved her.

Yes, what a wonderful talent Barbara Ruick was. Also, she played the younger stepsister in the Lesley Ann Warren 1965 television edition of "Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella", among so many other great performances.

It was charming to hear Williams tell the story of how she would derail Bernard Herrmann tirades with her good humor that would cool him off when she and Williams were with him and Williams credited her with helping him keep his friendship with Herrmann to the end of Herrmann's life.

Krakatoa:

What a sweet story! And although I used to know that she was in that version of "Cinderella," which I have on DVD, I had forgotten. Haven't watched "Carousel" in years, but always get misty-eyed when I see her in it. Miss Gordon MacRae too!

Spencer was Williams' frequent orchestrator, and was one of three who worked on Williams' score for "Star Wars" (along with Arthur Morton and Angela Morley) though Spencer was the only one credited.

And ironically a month after "Cinderella" was repeated on network television for the last time. "Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella" was a television musical that was videotaped (Rodgers and Hammerstein's only work for the medium), NOT a feature film. You can get both the version with Julie Andrews and the remake with Lesley Ann Warren (in which Barbara Ruick appears) both on D.V.D..

Yes, I have both on DVD, although when the one with Lesley Ann Warren finally came out, I had completely forgotten she had done it.
