Anyone know of any good used CD stores in the area in and around Toronto, Ontario? I googled the stores, and I will probably spend a day going to them, looking for film music. But I just wanted to see if anyone had any input.

I lived in Toronto for 4 months a few years back. The one store that particularly stands out in my memory is Sonic Boom. They have a great selection of new releases and many rare, older soundtracks. I once found the original Varese Club release of the 'Burbs (pre-expansion) for $10 there!

Good luck with your hunt.

If you ever make the trek up to Montreal, we're well-supplied with second hand CD stores. They're fast disappearing, unfortunately. Most of the CDs I've bought in the last 15 years or so have been second hand. frown

OK, here are the ones I know about - but don't buy anything European and leave the Japanese animé alone! Intrada, FSM and Saimel are off limits, too.

1) on Ste Catherine Street east of Berri about 4 blocks, there is a small shop with a BIG selection on the north side of the street
2) on St Denis above Ave des Pins, there is Beatniks (on the east side) http://beatnick.gemm.com/?for_seller=BEATNICK

If you are short of time and can only go to one place, walk east on the North side of the street on Mont Royal Ave (exit from Mont Royal metro station)

3) L'Echange (best selection in Montreal, although someone just dumped their Rota collection and the selection has taken a hit)
4) Foxtrot (watch out for punched CDs and the dreaded Columbia House)
5) Disques Musique (I think - also great selection)

About six blocks east, and one I'm always missing because it is hard to see (not much store front) is '33 tours' (I think) with an OK selection, including some Greek boots (the ones with the ugly plastic covers) which I refuse to buy.

If you went west on Mont Royal on leaving the metro, on the south side there is a small CD shop with a small collection of soundtracks. Please leave the German pressing of 'American Beauty', I expect I'll get around to buying it sometime ...

Vortex and Sonic Boom. The rest of them don't have a good score section.

I tend to have better luck with the Beat Goes On chain. Their website (beatgoeson.com) is good and has searchable inventory of CDs and DVDs. You can even create a wishlist and they'll email you when it's in stock.

So if you had to rank them (including Vortex)?

I was going to suggest them for those exact reasons I have made some great unexpected finds on their website and use their wish list feature regularly.

BTW with a name like MikeyKW I can bet I know where you are?

I don't know about Toronto, but here in Montreal we have a few stores. The best one is called l'Échange. I've found some incredible stuff there over the years. But the best one was (past tense) in Valleyfield, a small out of the way medium sized town. There I found Link, The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, Knights of the Round Table, Suspect, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and many others. The sales clerk thought I was insane when she saw me arrive with this huge stack of Cd's. The best part... not one of these Cd's cost me more than a mere 12 dollars (tax included) each.

Guess I got lucky that faithful day in August 2000.

Cheers!

Nice to see that you are in Montreal, Advise and Consent. Maybe we should have an FSM 'coffee morning' a some point. smile

I picked up an original Varese club release RED SONYA from the defunct L'Echange on St. Denis one year for $10. I exchanged it with a friend (who turned out to be the original owner) for John Williams' THE MISSOURI BREAKS. smile

Hope this still holds true. I'm going to Toronto in a couple of weeks for Fan Expo Canada.
